Yea it has an option built into the app that doesnt allow the option to be disabled. Well different levels but the strictest level doesnt allow for it, so ill toss it on for like a week and I have basic messaging access to contact family and like my email. but everything else I either cant access or its limited to just an hour a day. Its really nice actually. I recommend finding a similar app or I can even recommend mine if yall want.
Yessss thats me to a T hahaha
Yes pls! I am curious about this app : D
I tend to use the “all time read” stats and just manually deduct any learner materials when using my profile. It lets me pin point how many of each book type I’ve read. Don’t be fooled by my higher level books and series, those are on there because I used them as test beds for to figure out what’s comfortable for me and I’ll use them as an improvement gauge further down the line when I reread/ rewatch them.
Hope you’re ok and things settle down a little for you. It’s difficult when life happens at times but we’re here for you. I hope everything works out to plan and the good things increase. Good luck
This is how I like to gauge my progress, by rereading something further down the line and seeing the improvement I’ve made. It’s a real motivation booster.
おめでとう! It’s an awesome feeling, well done
Reading digitally does help the transition from easier books to more difficult books since it makes it quicker to look things ip and gain better understanding. Good luck with your next choice too.
I always thought Light novels have pictures in them whereas novels are just text. Though I think the lines are blurred when it comes to deciding which is which.
Nice
what have you been playing? I recently picked up FF7 remake to play in Japanese (since the English version has Japanese text if you change the switch language to Japanese and there are a stack of other games that do too). I find even simpler games take me a while to get to grips with in Japanese though.
I can’t use that excuse
my bed literally sits right next to the bookcase pf all my Japanese books and I have a booklight set up at the right level and angle to read so it’s one press and ding, reading set up is all go but I tend to read only occasionally in bed
Thanks! Yeah its much easier because I can highlight on my phone and click translate and it gives me the reading when I don’t know the kanji. Yay for technology.
Yeah but then you also have to sit in a comfortable position… pro of phone reading is I can lie on my side
I’ve also heard people compare it to them being a YA equivalent. I think it’s generally a pretty amorphous category, tbh.
I keep meaning to do this, either with XV or VII (maybe not XVI because I think the setting would have some harder vocabulary involved). I actually started both of them just a tiny bit a while back but then stopped…I remember listening to Barrett’s speech in the elevator and being like
cuz I got very little of it. Still, I think they’d be fun if I could just keep at it.
I mean, you can lie on your side with book reading if you’re not a coward.
Your arm might fall asleep in approximately two minutes, but still.
There was a tofugu artical that using kindle to read Japanese books was painful
If you logged in with a non-Japanese amazon account you couldn’t log out and loggin as ‘japanese’ you need a seperate kindle eventho the hardware is the same! And you need a Japanese credit card tied to the account
Oh yeah, quick update - I only got a little reading done yesterday (finished my 魔男のイチ volume 2, started a little bit into ヨナ volume three) and I didn’t get to any today…but that was because I was taking one of bunpro’s mock N2 tests instead!
I was very surprised by how well I did, so I immediately went searching in the forums to see if their difficulty is accurate or a bit off, and it seems that the consensus is that they’re easier than the real deal. So I’m going to take my results with a chunk of salt and keep trying to get more reading and reviewing in before July.
Very true
I usually find a way to prop myself up without hurting my dhoulders or I just flip from one side to the other with each page turn
Yeah but a few of my bunko light novels are most definitely not for YA audiences (liked the book covers so didn’t know this til they arrived)
I know Game Gengo did parts of a play through for it which may help understanding level but it is one that I struggle with a lot though my level is still kinda low (natively lv 24 is about my limit atm and even that is a stretch at times)
Thanks for all the kind comments!
A little life update
This week was kind of a weird week for me. I found out on Monday that I had lost a family member. I’m sure I was depressed the whole week from that. I haven’t been close to that family member in years and did know that their health had declined. Both of those things did definitely soften the blow at least.
On an exciting note though, I’ll be trying for a baby at the end of the year. I’m 33 and never wanted kids. That’s very slowly changed over the past few years and I think I’m finally ready to pull the trigger. There’s so much planning on my end that goes into that though. Lots of time spent thinking and googling lately for sure. (time I’d probably normally spend reading lol) Got to tell my mom our plans over the weekend and she’s very excited.
I didn’t end up reading anything the entire week until yesterday, when I went through almost 20 pages of Kino no Tabi. I’ve haven’t read this little in forever. Going to try and read every day this week again and get back into the swing of things.
Yeah, I’ve poked at his breakdowns a couple times, but they’re almost too detailed, yanno? I’ll get back around to it eventually though.
I haven’t done quite as much reading this week, but I’ve gotten through about a volume of ヨナ since Monday. I’ve also been rewatching the first few episodes of Bleach, because for some reason my brain was feeling the itch for that. I’m thinking I might re-read it too, to take more time with the kanji.
I know what you mean! His videos are very interesting and informative, but I just can’t sit still long enough to get through one of them.
Haven’t done too much reading lately. I did start on the third volume of よつばと!, but other than that I’ve only been reading in English. Hoping to read a bit more today, but not counting on it too much… lately my days off have a way of throwing unexpected things at me.
How’s everyone been doing on not actually buying more books?
I just realized I haven’t bought any since my new years shopping spree. I haven’t finished as many books this year as I would’ve liked by this point, but I am proud to not have bought anything else. There was a sale awhile back with full sets of novels for cheap on Amazon and Bookwalker. Spice & Wolf was a part of that, and I love the anime, but I knew the novels were probably years out of my reach so I didn’t get them.
I have 23 in my CD Japan cart but I haven’t bought them yet though 10 technically don’t count as they are to complete series I already own. I’ve also read 28 books this year (all manga) but that’s reduced my TBR so does that count?
That’s some next level will power at play there.
I must admit, I am pretty bad for buying stuff when I see it even if I’m nowhere near that stage of learning (the number of manga, light novels and children’s books I bought in complete sets is scary
) but only because I would rather have them while I have the ability to buy them and it gives me motivation to keep going even when things get too difficult for me since I really want to read those stories (Especially Moon Saga).
His videos are VERY thorough, which I applaud, but since I already have a certain level of Japanese it kind of means some of it is redundant. Sadly I think I would do better with something that just covered harder vocab/grammar, but of course “harder” is one of those lovely subjective things that vary from person to person…
Um. Well. Hm.
If we’re counting that same time stretch (late December, let’s say Christmas to pick a date) until now, for me…
…
…
…
to hide my shame
Going through my messages/photos/natively to try and judge, my sins since Christmas are:
- 暁のヨナ volumes 1~10
- 魔男のイチ volumes 1~6
- the entire xxxホリック series, plus volumes 1~4 of レイ
- the print edition of the Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint webcomic in Japanese, volumes 1~4
- the first volumes of フリーレン, 佐々木と宮野, and とんがり帽子
- one of the 青の祓魔師 volumes I was missing
- the two most recent 傷モノの花嫁 and One Piece volumes that have released
…and I may or may not have the kinokuniya page open for the Japanese translation of The Hobbit, because that book has a special place in my heart and might be fun to try.
BUT. I did also read, since that time:
- volume one of 佐々木と宮野 and 青の祓魔師
- about(?) 6 volumes of ヴァニタスの手記
- volume 9 of 傷モノの花嫁
- like two more コナン volumes, I think?
- the first two volumes of フリーレン (I borrowed volume 2 from a friend, so I don’t actually own that one)
- the first three volumes of ヨナ
- the first two volumes of イチ
So it’s not that bad! Right!
…I’m still going back to jail, aren’t I.
See, if purchases to complete a series don’t count against us, then a few of the charges against me should be dismissed, right?
(And congrats on 28 volumes this year! You’re really chewing through 'em
)
Oh, and I got through the first half of Bleach’s first volume after my update yesterday!
Totally valid
(And congrats on 28 volumes this year! You’re really chewing through 'em
)
Thanks
I have a goal this year of completing 170 manga that I already own, across 24 series. I did stumble with Delicious in Dungeon and it’s lack of Furigana but will pick it up again once I’m home as I would like to try finishing on of those each month minimum alongside the other 14 volumes per month I need to complete my challenge
Oh, and I got through the first half of Bleach’s first volume after my update yesterday!
Awesome! Well done and good luck reading the rest. Hope you enjoy it
It’s Friday and I don’t really have much to update but Friday is update day so I update
Atm I’m reading two books, a light novel and a self help book (?) about how to talk like an adult lol.
I…
unfortunately did buy more books. But they were all about business Japanese (including the above mentioned), which I need to study, so I think it’s justified.
Other than that, not much to say, just keeping on trucking and hope everyone else is too
Forgot to check in before I left, on Friday - but I had finished the second half of my Bleach volume, the first volume of メガネ、時々、ヤンキーくん (I borrowed it from a friend so there were no crimes committed! Yet. ), and volume three of フリーレン (also borrowed/crime-free). Not all on Friday, but since my last update, whenever it was on Thursday.
But they were all about business Japanese (including the above mentioned), which I need to study, so I think it’s justified.
Yeah I don’t think those should count against your sentence - good luck tackling them, though!
Yes pls! I am curious about this app
Sorry its so late, I got injured and was bed-ridden RIP.
Anyway, the app is just straightup called “AppBlock” they have a website too. https://appblock.app/
Im doing good, the body is getting old and I refuse to believe it lol. Anyway, because of that I did not read at all since I dont like reading while laying down. I DID however, re-watch all of Frieren, Jujutsu, Ippo, and started a new romance anime and did my best to read the subtitles so it kinda counts right?
How’s everyone been doing on not actually buying more books?
Ive been doing good! I gotta buy books for school so that doesnt count. And they are kinda pricey so Imma read the books I have.
