Oh, it’s got nothing on some of the voices in my elementary textbooks. I think it’s the Let’s Try textbook (I use a couple different ones depending on grade) but one of the characters is borderline unintelligible cause the VA is doing a silly voice
Yeah, lol, I have to come in unless it’s explicitly a holiday/school closed day. Thankfully they don’t mind if I study/do other stuff, though.
My school changed textbook this year too (even though we just tried a new one last year…) so we’ll be using the “Revised Landmark Fit English Communication I” textbook, hence why I’m redoing/revising my lessons right now.
As for reading, I almost definitely won’t be getting to anything today, and next week will be a toss up based on prep.
Has anyone got recommendations for places to order second hand books online (living in Japan)? I know I could try Amazon but would rather just pay for one delivery rather than multiple.
Looked at Book Off but their stock was a bit hit and miss
Rakuten ichiba is the goat. There are many second hand bookstores on there, including bookoff.
eta: and free shipping is common.
Sorry, book off is my usual go-to, I don’t know a lot of options beyond that
Note to self:
Sell some books back to book off this coming week or give them away
Ah I see, that makes sense. After I posted I wondered if it was something non-studying related.
This also makes sense. You’re in good company then. I’m not diagnosed with anything other than ADHD, but am sure I’m neurodivergent in some other way as well. I definitely get the repetitive task thing. I do realism drawings/paintings and I think the big draw is making tiny repetitive motions with my hand lol.
That’s really cool. I’m not a teacher, but as a tech am considered a teacher by proxy, so my school district pays for Canva for me anyway. I can even get teacher discounts at places that offer them, which is really nice. (I mean I think I’ve only ever used that discount like…twice in the past 7 years lol)
I work in a middle school. That kind of thing really just depends on the school district. The one I work for is huge and we change things pretty much all the time. To an annoying extent tbh.
Finished reading 老女的少女ひなたちゃん 1 a bit ago. Just wanted something easy to push me along. I’ve had this single volume for years and hadn’t read it because I thought I might not care for it. (I think it was originally free or something) I was wrong. I enjoyed the first volume quite a bit and will probably get more volumes the next time Amazon has them on sale.
Working on マグメル深海水族館 2 now. Just 3 more volumes of manga until I’m caught back up to my current reading goals.
Also not important or anything, but I definitely didn’t buy like 5 volumes of manga from Amazon last week when they were on sale plusalightnoveloranything. Theredefinitelyisn’tachildren’sbooksalegoingonrightnowtoothatI’llprobablybuyfromORANYTHING.
Okay but like. Which ones. You can’t leave us hanging like this.
ok but how do u all make ur text so small
this is bringing me back to my days of writing everything using < sub > because it looked cuter
oh is that how you are doing it
you cant do that and just not share with the class oh wait nevermind i think i figured it out
we outhere
every day i mourn the loss of the one formatting guide post
I think you can use basic styling html but it is not considered good practice anymore to use HTML for styling right
I’m not super familiar with forum formatting because I just used to use HTML… rip.,.
I usually update on Fridays but I havent actually updated in ages and I feel like I need to update for my own sanity so I will do so
Finished
- While I was on holiday I bought the first 6 volumes of Yomi No Tsugai, and I have finished volumes 1-3
- Finished vol 4 of Yotsuba
Started
- I picked up a short story collection called kyoufu bunko because each story is supposedly readable in 10 mins. It probably hits about the same age group as Fushigi Dagashiya. Each story takes me 30 minutes to read, so its an interesting benchmark. I’m quite into short stories as of late because they kind of remove some of the mental labour of a long story but still can be quite complex, which brings me to
- Ora ha akaoni, which is a short story collection aimed at adults. I posted about it before, maybe even already said that I started it? I finished the first story, which was… quite grim. I knew cannibalism would come up, but I still wasn’t prepared. Though in terms of words per page the writing is sparse, it has a lot of bookish expressions and the writing style was actually quite tough for me.
- Houkagogakari - A light novel. I am 50/50 about how engaged I am with this, as it is intriguing but its just… so long… about 400 pages when reading on PC, compared to the 280~300ish page novels I read previously.
- Jigoku kurayami hana mo naki - I havent actually started this but I will soon.
Decluttering progress
- I decided I am unlikely to reread the volumes of Flying Witch or Fushigi Dagashiya I have completed, so I put them in a bag to take to Bookoff. Actually my friend took the Flying Witch vols and is enjoying them which I’m super happy about. It feels much nicer to pass them on to someone who enjoys them than it does to sell them. Especially since I dont seem to have the very Japanese ability to keep books in pristine condition while reading them. Theyre not like, wrecked, but like the edges get a bit tattered etc and sometimes my hands get a bit sweaty and warp the pages a bit LMAO. Is that gross? IDK I guess I’m gross.
edits for formatting bc I keep goofing
also final addendum, it feels SOOOO good to write up my progress and reflections. I wonder why? Anyway thus ends my ramble.
Had my first class the other day. So since my last update I read about two chapters of the girl who can speak to animals. Its getting eaiser to read since Im starting to see the same pieces of grammer over and over again which is nice.
Ive also read maybe nearly hundred pages of other generic teaching and pronunciation pages while trying to do my pre-class homework and GODDAMN is it almost if not more tiring than reading in Japanese.
Anyway, Yea a couple hours on the train/bus just one way is going to give me plenty of reading time. So heres to using it properly!
A waving hand floats by buried in a river of class prep.
I tried to grab your hand but I rolled a nat 1 and slapped you away instead
SO…
I started reading this book ウソ!? ホント!? 謎解き徳川家康 which is like a kids/teens fact book about Tokugawa Ieyasu… I thought if it was for kids, it would be more readable and I am really lacking non fiction in my book line up, so I started it.
Wow.
This is so. Freaking. Hard.
There is so much (relatively) obscure language - I’ve learned 遺言 (will)、成敗 (punishment)、討つ (to destroy)、郷 (hometown), 早合点 (making a hasty decision)、託す (entrusting someone with/leaving a message)、and more that I forget in the span of like… 4 pages.
And then. The proper nouns. My god. There are so many names and places to keep track of. It doesn’t help that Tokugawa Ieyasu himself wasnt even originally called that…
I’ve been thoroughly humbled.
I’m also reading it paperback so looking up the words is seriously tedious.
sticks hand out of the river im also drowning in and high fives the waving hand
