Book collector rehab (actually reading what you own accountability thread)

No worries :slightly_smiling_face:
Out of curiosity, what drill book did you get?
I’m always on the look out fir drill books as I feel they help my learning style.

No reading for me recently as I wiped my library and started rescanning books to get all the tags, book types, author names and titles in correctly (was also missing some books that accidentally didn’t scan in). I’m about 843 through 1260 (approx) but I still need to manually add about 12 books and then sort the info for the 82 that will be sitting scanned but un-sorted. It’s been about a week now and I still have so much to do

My friend and I looked through the stuff they had at kinokuniya, and the one we liked best for a balance of providing vocabulary to offering practice/drill questions ratio was ļ¼‘å›žć§åˆę ¼ę—„ęœ¬čŖžčƒ½åŠ›č©¦éØ“N2čŖžå½™ (they have ę–‡ę³•ćƒ»ę¼¢å—ćƒ»čŖč§£ćƒ»č“č§£ versions too, I just was specifically looking for something to work on vocabulary.)

I haven’t gotten through a ton of it yet, but I’m liking the layout so far - it gives you a page or two of related vocabulary in red so you can use one of the little red cards to review, and then a page or two of questions that might use that vocabulary.

Some terrible desk-warming phone pictures, for reference:

And 恊ē–²ć‚Œ for that book organization! That sounds like an undertaking, for sure.

Cool, thanks for the pics. Looks like a pretty decent book, might check them out.

:joy: yeah, it has been for sure. Getting there with it, but it should mean I can check tags and search better at a glance than I could before. They were previously just scanned with whatever titles people had put them under at the time so a mix of languages, random tags and such: not very convenient for searching through. I had missed a chunk of them as well so ended up purchasing one or two duplicate copies of things.

Just letting y’all know that I’m in the mist of planning the book crime of the decade in three months time.

Heh heh heh.

Oh, it’s just that I booked my flight to Japan yesterday for the end of September. Which means I’ll have access to Bookoff(s) again!

For reference this is what I brought home from my visit two years ago

I’ve just had more arrive today  4 volumes of a blue bordered series that I was missing and I’m still in the process of re-scanning and logging all my Japanese books with Japanese titles, authors and tags (1040 out of 1250-1270 approx, unsure exact total as I had books delivered after I started re-scanning)

Hopefully by the end of the week I can get them finished re-scanned correctly so I can start reading again

Another victim of in Japan shopping to add to the list…

Yeah, I’ve had some volumes that scan through with really weird listed names - like, they were clearly the correct book/ISBN, but a completely unrelated name. (One ヨナ volume was listed as ā€œother 36ā€, and I had something that came up as a concert dvd despite having the right image and ISBN and everything??? It’s wild.)

And the duplicates issue is honestly why I bothered setting up my librarything in the first place - I had been keeping a list on my phone’s notepad app, but that was hard to check and maintain well.

Speaking of librarything, is that what you’re using to catalogue your collection, or another resource? I’d be curious to come browse through your collection if you’re willing to share :eyes:

Ah, so we should expect a spree of criminal activity! I can hardly cast stones, so I’ll be sitting here with the popcorn waiting to hear about your spoils, probably XD

No update at the moment - I was rather distracted the past few days doing some shenanigans research with a friend, honestly. But I kept on top of reviews, so I should be able to get to something today, assuming I don’t get distracted again.

Yeah, some of the ones I have were listed under French, Russian and German names or ā€œpodcastā€ and random symbols. I’m wondering if it’s how it’s pulled from Amazon as some of the books I purchased from UK amazon actually had random symbols on the order info for book titles :joy:

I originally had stuff fully logged through Natively and just used the site for to check but then some of my stuff isn’t logged and can’t be on there as it’s got no ISBN or it’s got no listing that can be linked to Natively to add it so I started looking for apps instead. It’s library thing that I use though the app on iOS is a bit buggy at times, I tend to scan with the app, adjust info or manually add volumes through the site and just check covers on the app or search names if I need to check what I’ve got.

I’m still in the process of logging stuff but most of what’s left is textbooks and JLPT or linguistic resources but happy to share what I’ve got scanned so far, unsure if it’ll update with new books added over time.

Yeah, I was initially using Natively too - and I still like it for information on a book’s difficulty, of course - but my two main issues were first that Natively doesn’t have some of the spin offs and other less mainstream stuff I own (and adding them takes a delay), and then the fact that in my books list it splits things up if I mark them as ā€œreadā€ compared to ā€œowned,ā€ which makes using it for actual catalogue purposes rather inconvenient.

Librarything’s app may be a bit janky (it crashes if I try to remove a book, lol) BUT the ability to scan the things in is such a godsend. I can always edit the details through the website, after all. And the covers-view list is great when I’m at bookoff and just trying to get a quick look at what volumes I’m missing from a given series.

Your collection is much more thoroughly organized, though. I was already considering going through and doing a bit more tagging/tweaking, so maybe I’ll do that as breaks in between reviews/reading today, lol. Thanks for sharing!

My much less organized bookshelf

EDIT: oh my god you have dragon eye, WHAT

Edit the Second: Finished volume 11 of å‚·ćƒ¢ćƒŽć®čŠ±å«! I think I’ll leave it there for today and go futz with my catalogue tags, and start a new volume tomorrow.

It is good and I like the ratings though a lot of my stuff is more niche

Mine freaks out if I check author info :joy:

It’s only been that way since I started re-scanning. It was a total mess previously

I do. Took me a while to find it but ended up with a second set of volumes 1-5 (haven’t put them up for sale as I’ve no idea how to get rid of them ). Found out about it by pure fluke about 10-15 years ago when I stumbled across the English version.

Nice :sunglasses: some pretty cool series in there and some I’ve not come across (or I knew of them but haven’t read/ watched them yet).

Well now I’ve spent all morning and early afternoon adding books to LibraryThing. Stop sharing interesting websites, it’s taking up too much time :joy: (actually please do keep sharing them I love stuff like this)

I read Dragon Eye yearrrrrsss ago, when I lived next to a library and would go chew through every manga on the shelf that even remotely caught my eye. I knew it had been on hiatus for ages but I looked it up after I saw your catalogue yesterday and it turns out there was a continuation years ago!!!
Crimes may have occurred upon this discovery.

Let me know if you’re curious about everything - there are a few things I’ve got that I haven’t actually tried yet, but the majority of them I’ve at least read in part.

Okay but you can’t say this and then not share your shelves :eyes:

Today’s update:
é”ē”·ć®ć‚¤ćƒ volume 9! Absolute roller coaster of a volume, I’m so excited for the next one - but it won’t be out until early October :pensive:

Just have to keep working through my other books in the meantime!

It was the artwork that caught me originally as when I found it there wasn’t much in the way of manga available anywhere near me unless it was superhero comics. I also found Dragon Warrior Monsters + (also in my Japanese collection) at the same time and screen captured every page of the first few volumes of each (in English). I still have them on an old laptop somewhere iirc :joy:

I haven’t actually started logging my English books but can’t decide if I should do that under a separate account or just separate sections so I can keep a proper running tally of my Japanese books

Will do, though it may be a while as I’m still scanning and tagging then have to sort my study routine again by the end of the month before I start adding more books (though I already have several missing volumes in the basket from a series I thought was a one-shot )

The joys of ongoing release schedules. But on the bright side, gives you something to look forward to and motivation to read more backlog. Win win :slightly_smiling_face:

I’m hoping once I get the scanning done and new study schedule planned, I can actually make a start on the book list I want to get through (mostly the full furigana colour bordered book series and some children’s books I want to read)

I haven’t been here in quite some time. I had my two week summer break at work and have now been back at work for a week. We’ve been doing renovations at our house and keeping up with reading things in Japanese started to feel stressful and unimportant.

I have been reading some books in English though. I ended up buying an XTEINKx4 and went through The Secret Life of Bees and A Retired Assassin’s Guide to Country Gardening. Both great books. It makes me realize that I miss having broader reading options that aren’t mostly children’s books.

I do hope to start reading more japanese books again soon and taking up actual studying again. I definitely feel like I was a little rusty before I took the 3 week break.

Btw dang yall are doing terrible at not buying more books just sayin…
