Finished up vol 5 of ヤニ吸う this week. Heading to Canada for a few weeks though and leaving lots of room in my suitcase for English books, so probably won’t be doing much Japanese reading until I’m back other than web comics. Good luck to everyone teaching this term with things!

If you actually read everything you own you can’t call yourself 積ん読人 anymore.

積ん読 is a funny word because it was in our English textbook as a Japanese word thats popular in English and all the students were like what the heck is 積ん読

I fully intend to 積ん読 these books I just bought tho bc god knows theyre all aspirational purchases
Feeling depressed somehow led me to buy self help stuff that I know in my heart of hearts ill never read but couldn’t help buying anyway

Was planning to read some よつばと！ at work today between tours… but then colleagues happened and took the little time I had :'D I even brought the next volume thinking I’d be able to get to it today.
Oh well. But! I did finish several textbooks last week. All review of stuff I should already know, but I’ve noticed that works really well for me.
Also I had a tour where a Japanese family was sitting right behind me talking, so I got a full 75 minutes of real listening practice haha! For sure missed a lot (also because I do actually have to pay attention to where I’m going… bridges still refuse to move out of the way for me, unfortunately) but I picked up quite a bit too. Most important thing I picked up was that they liked the tour, so that’s good xD

Surprisingly, I breezed through 10っ分で読めるこわい話 and finished it up this week. It feels great coming back to a book that was so difficult 1.5 years later and seeing how far I’ve progressed. I continued to have to look up about 10% of the words – pesky onomatopoeia, combining two verbs I know, some literary flare accents and alternate verbs, transition words, and trying to parse what the all hiragana sentences mean (Aha! した as in tongue!), but it ended up taking much less time than I thought it would.
乙女ゲームの破滅フラグしかない悪役令嬢に転生してしまった is still very difficult, and I haven’t gotten any faster yet. I’m slogging through at 2 pages a day.
I was browsing my library system and learned that there are almost 100 manga in Japanese! Not to mention light novels and other miscellaneous books. That could keep me busy for years. A good chunk of the manga was actually checked out, so there really is at least one other person who speaks Japanese around here.

I had an observer/見学者 at my weekend Japanese class and she asked me how I am with Japanese オノマトペ and I had to be like
「。。。弱点です。」
But congrats on getting through the short stories! And 2 pages a day of a difficult book still sounds like a good pace to me, at least.
Not much of an update - just a few pages of アトリエ over the weekend. (I was reading on the bus while I went to class…and nearly missed my stop 
)

…I’m very late to this thread, but maybe if I voice my ambitions, I can will consistent reading into existence! I am a bit of a 積ん読, but I fear I’ve also been lent many books that I should have returned to their owners long ago. So, along with my general goal to read more and more of my own books, I will read and return books to their generous, patient owners!
Reading Goals:
- Slam Dunk (the whole series…)
- Random JHS romance books (5 books/2 series?)
- Assassination Classroom (5 volumes?)
- Spy Family (1 recentish release)
In that order, I think. AKA, in the order that they were lent to me. OR all of the manga first, then the novels.
We can talk about reading goals for my own books a little later, I think…

…I should finish the manga in Japanese, but after failing the reading for N2 pretty miserably, I need to switch to novels for sure (I say, making my way through a VN instead). Picked up the Homicipher novelization, Haruhi Suzumiya, Apothecary Diaries, and The Silent Witch.
Hakuoki SSL first though, then Haruhi, then my more controversial VN pick, Diabolik Lovers lol

I finished Kokuhaku!
Honestly, I can’t be sure how much I really got at the end there, but I’m glad I tried and read it.
Hopefully I can revisit it in 2-5 years and understand a lot more!

Honestly I confess, I haven’t read through it in Japanese yet - I have all the volumes, I just also…have a lot of manga in general. I’ll get there, though!

As for a book club - I’ve never actually participated in one before, but it would really come down to what book folks wanted to read. Limited time and ability to focus, and all that

I read this in English some years ago and I still think about it, so I second the recommendation. If I weren’t already reading a book far above my level (Project Hail Mary), your comment would have propelled it to the top of my Japanese reading list. (Even though I don’t own it and it would go against the purpose of this “reading what you own” thread…)

プラチナデータ - cheap on bookwalker, and level 25 on learnnatively, esp since Keigo Higashino recently died
私の夫は冷凍庫に眠っている - level 28 on LN, recently picked up bc it looks interesting, a suspense novel iirc (THERE IS ALSO A FREE WEB NOVEL VERSION!! WOO)
かがみの孤城 上 - I saw the movie 3 years ago and have been meaning to read this book. The movie was quite slow paced, so this might be a slog, but it’s still a best seller. Level 28 on LN.
I’m also chill w/ easier books or more obscure titles but this is some of what I currently own that I think other people might also own or be interested in
For the wanikani users here I have discovered something that may be of interest!
I guess seasonal Readathons are a thing over there?
Not sure exactly how it works (I just stumbled across the post looking for fantasy recommendations, lol) but it sounds like it’s a day for folks to read as much as they personally can together!
Edit with update: finished アトリエ volume 3! Had to kinda push through the last few pages but I think I still got the gist of it.

Oh I read the manga adaptation of this one in French a while ago, the characters’ arcs where surprisingly well done !

Yes! We have them around the start of every season! They’re held on the weekends: pick a 24 hour period during the weekend and just read as much as possible! A lot of people share updates (and their snacks!) during their reading period, and it’s a lot of fun seeing what everyone else is reading. We also keep track of our reading time, pages, and/or character counts so at the end everything gets added up into a community total. We’re always trying to beat last season’s records! I’ve participated in every one since Summer '25 and it’s a lot of fun!

Classes got cancelled today for heavy rain/flood/landslide risks, so I’m gonna kill 30 minutes reading and then head home early to try and avoid getting soaked.

I’ve picked up Slam Dunk a few times since it was lent to me, but haven’t gotten much further than the first 5 pages or so. Then, of course, I end up reading those same pages over again when I think, “I’ll finally start reading it!”
However! Now I can officially say I got past the first few pages! 23 pages in, and I can already tell it’s easier to read than the other few times I tried!
@Ayara012 Thank you for cheering me on and sharing the latest WaniKani reading event. I’ve never tried them before, but maybe I can try that weekend! I think I’ll be out for the count the following day anyway from a Mikoshi event I’ll be helping out at.
