Bunpro JLPT Tests! New Feature, Sep 20th 2025

Hi, thanks for looking into this!

I haven’t changed my timezone or anything of the sort. Just to test out if it’s an isolated issue, I’ve tried to replicate it on another section of the same test. It happened again, and the timer is still running in the background. I’m tempted to try it on a different test now, just to see what happens ^^’’

But I still have no clue what could be causing it (especially since I haven’t seen anyone else report this?). I know I had some weird bugs going on for me a few years ago where my reviews seemed to have an endless due-date (iirc they were showing as due in 2-3 years on my profile despite being at a low srs), the report went unresolved though, and I ended up manually mastering them since they were stuck in limbo for too long. All to say, this current issue seems similar in a way? Both are time related… Maybe my account is haunted :ghost:

Let me know if I can check/try anything out on my end for you!

Hi, I think I found the bug that is causing those timer issues. We’ll work on a solution and should be fixed soon.

Thanks again!

Finally had the time to sit through an entire practice exam on my PC, here are some thoughts:

The Vocab section seemed waaaaay easier than other (N3) JLPT practice tests I’ve done before. Not only from the selection of Kanji/Vocab but also because there were not really any other “close” answers especially in compound kanji.
The same goes for the Reading section where there were not so many very similar answers.

On another note, I loved the implementation and the UI for the tests, however from a UX standpoint here are some suggestions:
The option to translate questions/instructions (at least in the review section) would be great.
In the :star: order type question in grammar/reading add the correct sentence structure in the review section so you’re not left guessing what the entire sentence would look like.
For the Listening section I would love to have an optional timer for before you start the audio and after the audio has stopped to allot time for reading the answer options properly and choosing an answer.
Since this December is the first time I’m taking the JLPT I was rushing through the audio files finishing within 23/40mins…

Thanks for taking the time to go through one of the tests!

For the readings, we are actually already in the process of going through making the incorrect answers specifically a little bit closer, so that they are a bit more difficult.

For the audio questions as well, adding reading time in there is something that we have also spoken about internally, and will quite possibly do at some point soon.

In regards to everything else, we’ll look into them! Good look with the official exam in December!

Heya ! Is there a way to reset progress / restart from scratch a given section ? The “pause” feature didn’t work properly and me closing the window after 3ish min ended up being counted as an overwhelming 21min of time used, 2/3rd of the allotted time for the listening session of N4 :grimacing:

You mean resetting one of these chunks, right?

There’s no way to just reset a single section right now, but I’ll see what we can do!

@Daru

No, I’m talking about the entire listening session of the exam. I know we can retake them after finishing, but since I’m only a few questions in it seems like a lot to go through all the answers randomly just to be able to do that

@frogg Isn’t it possible to go to the last question and then press submit?

after submitting answers (even if you haven’t gone through the entire exam), on the section select screen there’s a “Retake” button, which effectively resets that entire section and launches the exam from zero.

is this what you’re looking for?

Why are there so many questions in the vocab sections for the N4 practice tests?

It is using the current JLPT timing of 25 minutes but has 38 questions when it is supposed to be 28 questions in 25 minutes. Changes in test time and approximate number of test items for N4 and N5 | JLPT Japanese-Language Proficiency Test

Even with the old 30 minute test there were only 35 questions.

I don’t mind having extra questions to practice with, but I also wanted to get an idea of my timing…

Edit: N4 grammar and reading also seems to be using the number of questions from the old test (35 questions, rather than 29 questions) but the timing of the new test (55 minutes while the old 35 question version of the real test used to be 60 minutes).

That guide is only an approximation. The first two, Kanji Reading and Orthography actually can vary quite a bit from test to test (I am not sure how they decide this). I think currently we do have too many questions though, so I will review this.

I didn’t have that option since I hadn’t submitted my answers, still being in the early stages of the test. I ended up trying @Redglare 's solution and submitting from the last question (thanks !)

However there is clearly an issue with the pausing option, it seems to run even after closing the test window. I only spent 5ish minutes on this test (3 questions), and yet none of the displayed time stats are right.

Display before submitting answers : (time >> 5min)

Display afterward : (total time <> previously displayed total time)
(I started the test on Tuesday so even if the timer just never stopped it would have been way longer than 3h)

Glad to know that those first 3 answers were right tho :joy:

Thank you for adding these! The timing has been perfect for my own first JLPT attempt. I was already pretty sure that the N5 is a bit below my current level, but scoring a 98.5% on the practice exam has only increased my confidence. :sunglasses:

The one vocab question I did get wrong ended up being because the two words needed to understand the sentence were completely new to me. One is marked N3 by Bunpro, and the other unclassified. I noticed other questions which relied on knowing words Bunpro considers N4, too.

Is this intentional? I know there is no such thing as an official JLPT wordlist, so opinions on the level of words vary, but I would think Bunpro’s own tests would match the Bunpro official decks. Should I report questions like this?

Just saying - the JLPT tests have been released in the Bunpro mobile app, including offline support.

So if someone is flying on a plane, riding a train, and the like, they will still fully work. (If you want to do the listening tests, you’ll need to use the “Download Assets” button.)

Hi BunPro team. Not sure if there’s currently issues being addressed because some weird things happened while I took the 4th N4 test.
The first weird thing was that I took part 1 and submitted my answers but no score showed up. If I clicked on the Open button, I could see that the answers/results were being displayed. So I continued with part 2 and 3 which worked normally. However, I now had an overall score of 46.5% because part 1 seems to be ‘missing’. I forgot what I clicked on next but it turns out I wasn’t logged in… which is odd because I’m always logged in. So after logging in, it looks like I didn’t even take the test. No biggie but was just hoping I could check the mistakes I made in Part 1.
ALSO, regarding the last question in the listening section, the explanation for answers #1 and 2 should be switched.

I’ve just taken the language knowledge section of one N1 test. I like that some of your questions are about as evil as the real JLPT questions :upside_down_face:

Hi! It seems your login session expired while you were middle test.
So your answers got split: part linked to your user and part stored as an anonymous test taker.
I’ll try to locate the answers and merge it. In the meanwhile, please don’t use the Retake button in this test to avoid some data getting lost.

Sorry for the inconvenience.
