While I’m pretty good at recognizing 数、I always had trouble remembering the reading. After looking at all Jisho’s listed Kun/On’yomi readings, I may be even more confused. But at least I’ll be able to write it out!

メモ：Flashcards, flashcards, flashcards! Knowledge is power, or something like that.
On my 2k playlist of flashcards on Anki, I only have around 500 or so left to go before I’ll be making my own custom deck for words I find while reading. If anyone has any good information on where I can digitally look up Pitch Accent information for specific words, or has a good recommendation for a Japanese-only Dictionary, please let me know!

Everything you need is probably here. I personally like 明鏡 as a primary J-J dictionary as the definitions are short and easy to understand. I also really like 実用日本語表現辞典 but the entries are few and they are massive normally. Basically it is great for getting an in depth view of common phrases but the length of the entries could be scary if you are just starting to use J-J dictionaries.

メモ：Taken from the word 「支配」、translated as “Rule”, “Control”, or “Management”.
For some reason I have some trouble with writing this Kanji out. It feels awkward, especially in such a small space. This is really making me want to buy a new notebook.

Wow, that’s a lot of information. I’ll have to take a closer look at that later, but it does look like there’s a Pitch-Accent specific dictionary in there, which will definitely come in handy. Thank you for the incredible resource!

メモ：From my flashcards. I had a hard time grasping the Kun’yomi reading for this one so I decided to make it my Kanji for today.
Besides that, I’m having a lot of trouble with the word 「果たす」or “To accomplish”, “To achieve”, to “realize”, etc. Every time I see 「果」I think of 「結果」 “Result” or 「効果」 “Effect”, and remembering the meaning of “Achieve”, “Complete”, or “Succeed” escapes me. Maybe I’ll have that be my next Kanji.

Uhh, anyways, I noticed this Kanji is commonly used in compound words, similarly to 想 from a while ago. Jisho actually lists it as the 176th most common Kanji used in newspaper.
I don’t particularly have a problem with writing it out, but a little bit of extra practice never hurts, especially with a Kanji I see as frequently as this.

This is one of my leeches. I always mix it up with the right hand side of 認 and 務 because I learned them at the same time. In particular the 刃 versus 刀…
Of mild interest: the kun reading 解ける (to be solved; to become untied) can also be spelled 溶ける (to thaw).
The kanji is also used as phonetic component in 蟹 (crab).

メモ：Had a busy couple days, I’ll have the remaining two posted in a bit.
It was interesting to go back and look at the different readings for 「果」、as 「くだ」isn’t even among them. 「果物」is actually a special, 「熟字訓」reading where the assigned characters are only attached to the word’s meaning but not the pronunciation. Rarely the word can be read as 「かぶつ」、and the rarely-used alternative Kanji form is 「菓物」。Strange how the very first word I was introduced to using this Kanji doesn’t follow the typical readings at all.

メモ：More flashcard words, and the two かわく’s.
I remember when I was first learning Japanese using Rosetta Stone and hear the て form of 「渇く」for the first time. It was so weird to hear something that sounded so similar to 「可愛い」but have a completely different meaning. Then I heard the て form of 「乾く」and became even more confused.
Fast forward over a year and a half later, I’m going back over these words in my Flashcards and they both show up in the same day. In order to try and cement the differences between the two, I figured it would be best to go over them individually and make a mental note of the differences so I can discern them easier.

There are a bunch of とけるs although you mentioned the two most common ones I have seen 熔ける before (different nuance, used for smelting and stuff with metals) and I know a few others exist. There is also ほどける which can be written as 解ける (still read ほどける、not とける、which is very confusing although it is normally written in kana for this reason). On the transitive side of things there is 説く・解く・溶く which is also quite interesting.

メモ：I’ve been working hard at improving my vocabulary through these daily characters, but sometimes it’s nice to go back to a simpler time. The only thing that tripped me up about 物 when learning it was then learning about the suffix 「者」being either 「もの」 or 「しゃ」depending on the reading.
While I have been working diligently on my vocab… my grammar studying has stagnated.
I used to try and get at least 2 new BunPro grammar points done a day, but recently I haven’t been keeping up with that goal, as I actually write out pages for every point I study now. Writing stuff down seems to help me learn, or something like that.
Lastly, I haven’t been doing much drawing as of late. I got into a rut where a certain sketch I was working on just wouldn’t look good, no matter what I did, and it’s been hard to find both time and motivation to keep working at it. Hopefully that will change here soon, and if it does, I’ll throw my sketches in at the end of the posts like usual.
I hope everyone reading this is having a good day. Keep doing your best, even if that means just completing old reviews for today.

メモ：One’s from a flash-card, the other was just one I stumbled upon in the wild.
I figured I’d write out 重 to help me remember the different readings, but I’m not sure that was much help to be honest. It looks like it can be broken down into 5 main readings between On’yomi and Kun’yomi, and it may not be as many as say 日、but it’s still a lot to remember.

2024年5月12と13日「日と月」
メモ：Now this is where the confusion begins.
I’m just doing my flash cards as normal, and I come across the word 「味噌」。Business as usual, I go to add the example sentence to the hint section like normal and I notice the second Kanji changes between the flash card and the editing fields.
Long story short, it seems like some font-packs automatically convert between the two forms, which greatly confused me, especially when trying to look up information regarding the one that shows up first on my flashcards, or the 「口曽」form.

メモ：Done with the flashcards! Time to start making my own from words mined from reading/games. As a side note for anyone learning, I advise against playing the Persona games on the hardest difficulty. Really, this is a warning for anyone playing the Persona games, learning Japanese or not. Don’t do it. It’s not worth it.

Wow. I’ve been doing this for over 6 months now. Time sure does fly when you’re not paying attention.
There have been periods (especially recently) where I haven’t been as punctual as I should have been with this thread, but I have to say I feel like I’ve really learned a lot by doing this for so long.
It’s gotten to the point where I can’t keep track of all the different Kanji I’ve gone over. I’d have to make a spreadsheet or something just to remember them all specifically now.
Moving forwards I’m probably going to take a more relaxed approach towards this project. If I repeat a character I’ve done in the past, that just means I probably needed a refresher anyways.
Let’s see if I can make it to a year!
