Is this app abandonware?

Hello,
I created my account last week, added a WaniKani connection, and all of a sudden, I’m on the 45 level  I filed a support ticket and added another message to it, but no answer. So, I decided to ask for account removal (I’ll start from scratch). I sent an email two days ago, but again, there is no answer.

So I have a question for a community - is that app abandonware?

Very much not so, there are content and software updates on a nearly-weekly basis lately.

You can reset your progress from https://bunpro.jp/settings/reset I believe. I did it once to restart N5 from scratch early on.

No, it is definitely not. Posting on these forums usually gets a response within a day, and there is a good amount of activity on the forums in general.

Also, the bug reporting available on the pages of individual Grammar items and Vocab items usually gets a response within a day, maybe sometimes longer, but usually gets one. Also, for bug reports during quizzes/reviews.

However, if you filed a ticket (I’m imagining via a general feedback form, or possibly via email), and did not get a response, I would consider this a site-usability and customer-feedback/customer-support issue which hopefully they can begin to address better in the future. Maybe they could put it on their general plans/roadmaps.

As for resetting the WK ‘progress’, that’s available via the Settings > Reset page, under Reset Vocab. Select “Wanikani” (or whichever option you want to reset) and then click “Reset this Deck”.

[NB: It can’t be ‘undone’ (in the sense that you can’t just press a single button to revert back if you did it accidentally), but since you are new and haven’t made any specific progress on Vocab on BunPro anyway, this shouldn’t be a big issue. You can always go back to the Settings > General and press Sync Vocab again in the future; it will just consider that a ‘new’ operation rather than an ‘undo’.]

Personally, I did not really find the Sync Vocab feature very useful overall. I ended up resetting all my Vocab and starting from scratch anyway, because BunPro has recently added support of so-called ‘Cloze’ reviews, which allow you to answer Vocabs in the context of real Japanese sentences (like fill-in-the-blank, basically-ish). So I wanted to ‘re-learn’ all the WK vocab having this in-context support. I find it really valuable! Anyways!

I wish I had asked here first. Thank you for (trying) to help. But I don’t have that reset Vocab option on the screen.
I played with Grammar resets, and now my level goes briefly to 0 and then to 10.
When I try to remove the WaniKani key from the panel, it reappears after refresh.
If I knew it would be like this, I’d never add the WK key here.

I created a support ticket using a ticketing system (6 days ago) and sent an email ( two days ago).

Hmmm, I think I might have heard something somewhere.

It is possible that you might need to opt-in to the Beta program in order to access that Vocab reset feature. Try going to Settings > Account, and under Bunpro Beta > Opt In select “Yes”. Then try to access the vocab reset again, and see if that works.

If it works, then you can do the vocab reset, and you can optionally turn off the Beta opt-in again, in case you want to focus on the ‘official released’ version of BunPro. Perhaps that’s a good idea to start with – unless you’re generally a power-user type of person. Well, actually, I don’t think it’s quite so dire as that, but sometimes we end up exposed to features still ‘being tweaked’ so to speak, so keep that in mind if you choose to stay in the Beta opt-in.

If it doesn’t work, then I’m not sure where to go from here. A moderator such as @Asher will surely respond.

Thank you! It helped. Now, my level is zero again, so I can start again. I still have that WK key in settings, but everything should work now (I expired that key on WK). The only thing that is left is a lot of badges that are on my account. But hopefully, support will be able to clear that when they reach out to me eventually.

A WK key is still quite useful for handling the automatic hiding of furigana for kanji you already know in WaniKani (I believe it means, ‘at Guru level’). You set the Furigana setting in Bunpro to use WaniKani, and it will automatically hide furigana for any kanji that appears in the main content of the site: Grammar points (names, descriptions, etc.), Vocabs, example sentences, etc.

[It doesn’t do anything for the forums, though, because that’s a completely separate system.]

This is useful so that you get practice remembering and using your knowledge of kanji readings from WK while you use the site. But for kanji you haven’t done in WK yet, it will show you the furigana so you can read it (pronounce it) without having to look up the reading.

Also, at any time, you can glance at a hidden reading by hovering your mouse over the kanji (assuming you’re using a mouse. Not sure how it works on a mobile device). And, you can manually turn readings on and off for particular kanji (or kanji-compound words) by clicking on a word with clickable kanji, and it will pop up a little ‘reading pop up’ to let you fiddle with the settings. It’s quite cool, IMHO.

You can easily (re)generate a new WK key and put it into BP at your leisure. Just don’t click “Sync Vocab”, and you should be totally fine!

@emilyo sorry that you haven’t got a response! Usually the people that respond to feedback differ depending on what the feedback is, and who is responsible for that part of the website. Content feedback gets the quickest replies, as we have 4 people on the content team, development replies can take a little longer as the bug reports that come in daily can be quite a large number and really only 1 or 2 people that answer/know the answer to that kind of feedback.

For the vocab, you’ll need to opt into beta as other users mentioned, and then you’ll have a lot more freedom to alter various settings. We are actually planning on moving some things out of beta quite soon, so that this will be far easier to find for all users in the immediate future.

Again apologies for the slow response, and I hope that you are able to continue to enjoy your time as a Bunpro user

Thank you! Thanks to the quick response here I was able to fix my mistake. After Vocab reset I’m back at the starting point. The only thing that wasn’t reset was the badges. But this is not a big deal for me. I left a note about that in the feedback form. And now I’m back on testing Bunpro  which looks like a great pair for WK.

It isn’t abandon ware they just got a team of possums working as hard as they can. Sometimes it takes them a while because they spend most of their time eating jelly donuts and screaming but eventually they get around to it. Normally if you desperately need a response or see something you just gotta use @ and any random “admin” who you know a couple times and then it works.

I have never received a response for a support ticket.

Always receive quick responses here, from the mods and the community.

Clicking instead of hovering works on mobile (at least on my iPad)

I’m pretty sure there was a time, where most of the time the team was doing pushups to restore a lost streak!

I’m pretty sure that unlike wanikani, the levels on bunpro have no impact on your learning path. Syncing WK just marks the vocab from there as “learned” which gives you a lot of free XP. You can still start your grammar from zero.

Can confirm this is a fact. Took me a while to reply to this because I spent 4 hours screaming at my keyboard and the remaining time at the neighbors cat.

It’s not that, it’s because they’ve formed an idol band and need to practice as much as possible.
