I did 60 hours of that, but don’t regret it. I think it’s really cool to know how exactly they don’t stay in head, and how exactly that time was wasted

And I’m not even sure it was a total waste. Maybe it helped my intuition a lot, and even if I couldn’t recall them clearly, those readings might have been making my reading faster, or making word learning faster, or just making me see kanji better, etc.

I never said not to learn meaning, and in fact the post was in defense of the method WK uses

I have to agree. After learning katakana and hiragana, I thought the next logical step would be to learn the joyo kanji. Then I’d know everything, right?

That’s a year of studying I’ll never get back. And no, even here in Japan it’s not useful to know kanji in isolation.
