Opened it today and it was half-off only $24.70 so I just decided to pull the trigger.
Currently using Satori Reader and really enjoy it. The interface is very smooth and handy for looking up words and adding them to the built in SRS system and it keeps the context of the story which is helpful. The random bonus grammar info as part of the lessons are helpful. So far no complaints. It’s my go to when I want to practice reading and it’s fun when I learn some grammar points in here then almost immediately see them in a story and I’m able to follow along a lot better.
How does the difficulty level compare ?
“Japanese Folktales for Language Learners: Bilingual Legends and Fables in Japanese and English” has about 20 or more tales and like “Japanese Stories for Language Learner”, the difficulty goes up. The first tale is really easy and the last one (かぐや姫 i think) is the most difficult one. But “difficult” does not mean impossible, it is an intermediate level (maybe high intermediate, but not advanced).
I am currently in the middle of the book, the most challenging part for me is the vocabulary (i am really bad at learning vocabulary) but orherwise it is not really complicated.
To be honest, i still haven’t finished “Japanese stories for language learner”. I read Urashima Taro, Yuki Onna, The Spider’s Thread, which difficulty was ok, but for The Siblings who Almost Drowned, and Gauche the Cellist, i understand nearly nothing so i left it on the side for now.
When I was starting with Japanese I found out satori and really got hooked on it, but because I was new to japanese it was taking me so long to finish reading anything besides basic grammar lessons. I don’t say that it was bad because I learned a lot with it but it was hard for me to keep learning because I needed to spend over 30 minutes of intensive focus to compregend 5 minute epizode.
Now I am using a Todaii. Am I using it actively? No. It is hard for me to find interesting materials. Sometimes I open it because I bought paid version but it’s not even ones a week. Huge upside of it are other things than reading arciles, for example lessons (I didn’t touch those) or JLPT test (That’s really cool).
To sum things up. It depends what you wand and/or need. In my opinion Satori is better for reading Todaii for
Yeah, I recently did a JLPT test on it was really good, the lessons are okay, but the JLPT test are nice. I prefer using it on the phone because at the end of articles it gives a test in order to see whether or not you were paying attention. The lessons are okay its just comprehension and asking what would go into a spot. Still need to try Satori Reader but I’ll probably try it sometime within the next month.
Thanks for the response!
I’ve been using SR for a while and finally finished my first Intermediate story, Kona. I tried The Neighbor, but it was really too difficult. The River Sanzo seems ok so far. Does anyone have any recommendations for which Intermediate stories are easiest after Kona?
