In 1587 Hideyoshi had almost full control of the west of Japan, with the last challenge being the island of Kyushu. Here the Shimazu clan was majority in control, and had a strong military due to past conflicts and the fact that this was the first and largest point of trade in Japan with the western world, so they were technologically advanced. The first attempt was a complete failure and Toyotomi’s forces were driven from the island, however the second invasion plan succeeded, and his forces swept over Kyushu until he finally defeated the Shimazu in their homeland. This essentially gave Toyotomi full control over all western Japan from around Edo city, and now he could concentrate on the east.
In 1590, Toyotomi was on the verge of destroying the powerful Hojo clan, which ended with the unique and very unusual siege of Odawara. Toyotomi by now was an expert in castle sieges and had some genius plans in taking down castle previously. The Hojo had pulled most of there forces back into the massive Odowara castle, which would be the best defensible position due to its structure and natural defences. Toyotomi had huge numbers but decided to just sit and wait to starve them out. With such a large force though, and potentially long wait, he needed something for his army to keep them in high spirits. So his idea was to turn the attacking camp into a makeshift city of entertainment. He invited brothels, musicians, food stalls, and all kinds of entertainment to set up within his camp, and they simply partied the time away. People from around the area packed lunches to come and see the sights. Eventually, as expected, the Hojo moral dropped along with their supplies. The final attack came after miners dealt significant damage to parts of the wall, and the Hojo ended up surrendering so they may live on.
