About 40 Years in: 1603
Just over 2 years ago the biggest battle in Samurai history took place: The battle of Sekigahara. Around 150,000 troops from both sides met to decide who would take full control of Japan. Tokugawa Ieyasu had quickly built his forces and secured allegiances with many other clans after Toyotomiâs death, as he knew this was finally his time to make his move. Those loyal to the Toyotomi formed the Western forces under Ishida Mitsunari, though his poor treatment of other lords in the past left him being disliked by several clans, who in the end would defect in the middle of the battle. The numbers were fairly even and it could have gone either way, but the Eastern forces were far more loyal the Ieyasu, and some on the Western side had even made secret pactâs with Ieyasu saying that they would defect to his side. An estimated 30,000 men died in the battle, though it could have been much larger had it not been raining so heavily the night before, rendering many of their firearms ineffective. Ieyasuâs forces clearly won the day, though it would take a few years to squash the remaining pockets of resistance. Toyotomi Hideyoshiâs son was also still alive, and would become the focus of the last major resistance to the new Shogun.
In 1603 the Edo period begins. Tokugawa Ieyasu was appointed Shogun by the emperor and begins his families 260 year long rule as the military government. Ieyasu rules from Edo castle in Edo (Tokyo) as the capital, making large upgrades to the castle and making the Daimyoâs pay for it of course. This, along with forced visits to the capital, was one of the ways the Daimyo were kept in check. The constant large cost of supporting the capital and the procession to and from Edo meant they wouldnât have enough money to fund a revolt or build an army.
