About 96 years in: Late 1650
In 1657 one of the single greatest disasters in Japanese history occurred: The great fire of Meireki. Fire had always been a concern in the cities, as the buildings at the time were made almost entirely of wood and paper, and built in a very compacted way across the city with very narrow streets. A fire brigade had already been established in Edo in the 1630’s to help with smaller fires, however they were not in any way prepared for this. When the fire started there were extremely strong winds which were recorded to have contributed to its significant spread. It blew the fire from the north side of the city down to the south, then back towards Edo castle over a period of 3 days. The fire destroyed almost 70% of the entire city and estimated to have killed over 100,000 people. Reconstruction of the city took 2 years, but allowed the government to replan the city design, creating more practical centres for trade and urban areas, as well as widening many roads. The outskirts of Edo castle also had to be rebuilt, which was also redesigned to better deal with large fires.
