Still in Tokugawa Ieharuâs rule, there were 2 volcanic eruptions: First in1778 at Sakurajima, causing 1000âs of deaths. Secondly in 1783, Mt Asama erupts, which is just north of Edo, causing widespread damage to the surrounding area. This second eruption significantly contributed to the Great Tenmei Famine, which ran from 1782 until 1788. Reports say around 20,000 people died during the famine, but census of populations show a decline of almost a million people from 1780 to 1786. In 1779 the Dutch official Isaac Titsingh came to Nagasaki and conducted heavy research into the life of the Japanese people and the Bakufu, even speaking with the Shogun himself. This provides unique and valuable first hand information of this time in Japan. (much of what I have written about 1700âs Japan comes from my copy of his works!)
In 1784 another assassination within the Shogunâs castle occurred. Tanuma Yamashiro was part of a high government official council (the è„ćčŽćŻ), and the son of the senior member of the same council. Both men were hated by seemingly everyone apart from the Shogun himself, and so were untouchable for the time being. However one night after a meeting of the council, a guard named Sano Zenzaemon was on duty in the halls and came running up behind him and slashed a few times, causing serious wounds that killed Yamashiro soon after. The other guards came to assist but it was later reported they were so slow that it âseemedâ like they were intentionally letting the assassin get away. A chief investigator was put on the case by the Shogun, and eventually Zenzaemon was found. Such was the hatred of Yamashiro that officials pleaded insanity so as to remove consequence for his Zenzaemonâs family, and he was hailed a hero of the people, meanwhile the coffin and grave of Yamashiro was vandalized. Poetry was even written about how great it was that he died! Once it was confirmed Yamashiro was dead, Sano Zenzaemon was ordered to commit seppuku, which was said he did with pleasure knowing he had achieved his goal. Even Zenzaemonâs wife, although she had been pardoned, proudly commended his actions then followed him into death by stabbing herself in the chest.
