About 234 years in: ~1797
Tokugawa Ieharu and his chief councillor promoted strict observance of Neo-Confucianism, and in 1790 made an edict to the Edo Confucian Academy restricting some books and enforcing the teachings of Neo-Confucianism by Zhu Xi as the official Confucian philosophy of Japan. In 1792 an earthquake occurred in Nagasaki prefecture which resulted in the eruption of Mt Unzen on the Shimabara peninsula. This caused the collapse of an entire part of the volcano, and along with the earthquake itself, created a tsunami that smashed Hisho (now Kumamoto prefecture) on the other side of the bay, then bounced back into Shimabara. Estimated casualties from the eruption and tsunami was around 15,000 people. Mt Miyama, a smaller volcano near Osaka also erupts in 1793.
In 1794-’95 an artist by the name of Toshusai Sharaku creates a large number of sketches and paintings of the three major Kabuki theatre houses in Edo. The works are generally divided into four groups based on the time they were made, and each group changes in style. Initially they are all upper body (busts) images with very expressive faces, then move to larger full length portraits, and the finals sets follow more conventional methods and less unique than his original works. Many of these works survive today and are currently being displayed in museums all around the world, or part of private collections. Needless to say they have a fairly high value. Some of his images many here have likely seen before, and in fact one was used a few years ago by Seibu Railway as part of a safety campaign!
This is Sharaku’s original work vs. the safety poster!
