15 years in: around 1577/8-ish.
A couple years after the famed Takeda cavalry crushed Oda and Ieyasu forces at Mikatagahara, Takeda Shingens son Katsuyori rides to besiege Nagashino castle. Nobunaga is a lot more prepared this time and tactfully sets up a range of bamboo stockades and arranges his gunners in 3 ranks in order to set up continuous fire at the charging cavalry. This results in his forces completely stopping the Takeda charges again and again, eventually breaking their forces and the Takeda flee. This is a huge moment for the use of firearms in Japan and even the world, as their full potential is come to be seen.
Around the same time, another one of the three most powerful eastern clans challenged Oda. Uesugi Kenshin was a famous and powerful daimyo, very skilled in strategy. After the fall of the Takeda, he saw the opportunity to be the largest clan in the east and oppose Nobunaga himself. He amassed a huge army and marched into Oda territory, though after a couple of battles retreated back to his own land. Interestingly he didn’t think Oda was that much of a threat and wrote of plans to go back, however he died of suspected cancer in 1578. As is so common during this period, his death led to the infighting of his sons, and the end of any grand plans for the Uesugi.
