We’ve now made it to Fukushima, where breakfast ramen is considered perfectly normal and the local sake regularly beats the rest of Japan.
1位:喜多方ラーメン Kitakata ramen
I had Kitakata ramen during my Tohoku drive last month. I had to wait about half an hour, but it was well worth it. The thick, curly noodles were amazing.
Kitakata ramen uses thick, flat noodles that contain a lot of water, giving them their chewy texture, together with a fairly clear soy-based broth made from pork bones and dried fish. It is said to have begun in 1924, when a Chinese immigrant started selling noodles from a street stall. The city is also known for asa-ra, with restaurants opening early for farmers, factory workers and anyone else who fancies ramen for breakfast.
2位:桃 Peaches
Fukushima is Japan’s second-largest producer of peaches after Yamanashi. Its main variety is Akatsuki, which is very sweet and juicy but remains fairly firm even when ripe.
The town of Koori is particularly famous for them. Carefully selected Akatsuki peaches from the town have been presented to the Imperial Household every year since 1994, earning it the title “Home of Imperial Tribute Peaches”.
3位:会津ソースカツ丼 Aizu sauce katsudon
Aizu sauce katsudon consists of shredded cabbage and a pork cutlet placed on rice, with the cutlet thoroughly coated in a thick, sweet and savoury sauce. Each restaurant uses its own recipe, so the level of sweetness, acidity and spice varies.
Its precise origin is unclear, and Fukushima is not the only place to claim sauce katsudon; Fukui and Komagane in Nagano have their own versions as well. Aizu even has a less common variation in which the sauce-seasoned cutlet is simmered with egg.

4位:福島の日本酒 Fukushima sake
Fukushima’s cold winters, good rice and clean water make it well suited to sake brewing. There are breweries across Aizu, Nakadori and Hamadori, producing everything from light, dry sake to richer and sweeter ones. Personally, while I like both sweet and dry sake, I’ll often ask for a sweet one.
For nine consecutive competitions, Fukushima had more gold-award winners than any other prefecture at the National New Sake Appraisal. It returned to joint first in 2025 and then won outright in 2026 with 20 gold awards, so if you’re after some delicious sake, Fukushima is most definitely the place for you!
Our next stop is Niigata, which costs 25,160 yen to get to, making our next target 77,310.
My family and I watched, over about 2 weeks, season 1 of The Summer Hikaru Died, in Japanese with English subs.
