A question about the study question 「売上額を調べるために採算をしました。」

This is a study question given for the word 「採算」, for which the meaning is listed simply as “profit”. The translation of the sentence is given as “We did a profit analysis to investigate the sales amount.”

I’m trying to understand where the “analysis” part is coming in. Is this just intuited from saying 「~をする」?

Also not quite understanding the meaning overall. To me it doesn’t really make sense that you would analyze profit to determine the sales amount—it would be the other way around, wouldn’t it?

If you check the dictionary entry for 採算 it says:
利益があるかどうか、収支を計算してみること。
(Calculating income and expenses to see whether there is a profit)
I guess that is where the analysis part comes from. From my understanding 採算 is the process of calculating and 利益 is profit itself (as you can see in the definition)

I’m not 100% sure but maybe the sentence itself says something along the line of checking whether or not the sales numbers add up by looking at the income/expense (plausibility check with actual income through the sales)
