Alternate between fill-in and reading reviews

Hi!

I’m using the fill-in type of reviews for both vocab and grammar (I like it and some say it makes retention better), but I recently noticed that my reading skills aren’t really keeping up, I sometimes have more trouble recognizing a word in context than recalling it when I’m prompted with the English translation and asked to fill-in the Japanese version.

I would still like to keep the fill-in review type, but is it possible to automatically alternate between both styles during reviews? Be it a random choice between the two styles, or a simple alternation (if the last time I was asked about item A was with a fill-in question, the next review for that item will be reading, and vice-versa).

I don’t believe there is a way to automatically alternate as you’re loading the review set with whichever review type (someone correct me if I’m wrong), but you could always manually change it each time you do reviews…

That would be a nice feature. I also quite like the fill in reviews, but when I use them for all my vocab reviews it can make my review pile hard to manage. Additionally it would be nice to be able to change the ratio of reading to fill-in and to be able to manage it on a deck basis.

I would even broaden this and say that each lesson should offer a selection of settings regarding how it should be tested, including:

  • testing both fill-in and reading
  • testing both casual and polite forms when available
  • asking multiple questions if the lesson is complex, for example う-Verb (Negative) (JLPT N5) | Bunpro
  • test each of the above in the same round, adding multiple reviews per lesson

I am sure others can come up with more interesting ideas. Overall, I think that adding a single review with one type of quiz is not enough. The lessons on Bunpro can go from super simple to complex grammar points that could have been split into 5 lessons or more, and the reviews just don’t cover it.
