Any advice on reading?

Hi all,

I am around a week into Bunpro now - really enjoying it.

However, I am slightly worried that I am not reading when doing reviews. I just look for the necessary word, remember the romaji, type it in and move on.

This means that I’m not really engaging with the kanji or sentence as a whole. I worry that if I came across some of these words in the wild, I wouldn’t actually recognise them. I’m concerned I’m missing out on valuable reading practice and kanji exposure.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any advice for how to shift my approach and build better reading skills alongside grammar?

Thanks!

Hey there JoeJB!

I’m a fellow Bunpro noob! Just like you!

The app has a feature for people who like to rush like you and me, to still get reading practice. But you have to be make time, like we didn’t do when were were rushing through our reviews.

If you click the practice button in your dashboard, you can select CRAM! And then you can select the lessons or vocab you’d like to cram. I recommend reading exercises. Then you can read them in sentences and and see if you recognize them.

If that’s not IN THE WILD enough for you, then you can select READING PRACTICE, and start working through the graded readers at your own pace. They start pretty easy, but slowly get harder.

I hope this helps! Happy studying!

I second the reading practice! I always try to read the full sentence even if I already know the answer, but my anxious self tends to forget, specially if I have a lot of reviews piled up.
For this, I dedicate time only for reading. I do a full read out loud, trying to look at furigana as little as possible, skipping if I don’t understand something, then read the translation, try to connect grammar points or new vocabulary, then read the full text again.
Happy studying!
