Set 1: Nikko
Letβs go to Nikko to enjoy the signs of Autumn at the famous Toshogu shrine, featuring the popular βsee no evil, hear no evil, speak no evilβ monkeys.
Free pin: Jizo Statue (Free promotion has ended, but still available for purchase)
Believed to be the protector of women and children, and also as a guardian of travelers, Jizo is one of the most beloved figures in Japanese Buddhism.
Set 2: Fall Day
Yaki-imoβ¦ Ishi-yaki-imoβ¦! beckons you from afar. The smell of freshly roasted sweet potatoes waft in the air as you get in line, while a tanuki and flying squirrels play amongst fallen momiji and gingko leaves. What a beautiful fall day.
Free pin: Yaki-imo (Free promotion has ended, but still available for purchase)
Just like how pumpkin spice and gingerbread are commonplace in the U.S. during this time of year, sweet potato and sweet potato flavored items (like chips or candies!) are a sign of the season in Japan. The traditional yaki-imo trucks have become less common in recent years, but there are still vendors making their rounds.
Set 3: Harvest Moon
Each autumn, on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, people gather to celebrate Tsukimi (moon viewing) to admire the the yearβs brightest full moon reflection, stack round white dumplings (tsukimi dango) and display plumes of pampas grass (susuki) as a protective charm against evil and to welcome the gods. Itβs a time of gratitude, reflection and appreciation for nature.
Free pin: Moon Rabbits
According to the legend, a rabbit is pounding mochi on the moon. During Tsukimi season, youβll also notice beloved rabbit motifs everywhere due to this tale.
And thatβs it!
