Belomi's return! (Accountability/study log)

Maybe it’s because I am still a little sick, but I am having one of those days where I am looking back at my language learning and feeling like nothing is quite sticking. “You live in Japan, go practice!” Unfortunately, that’s not in the cards with how small my town is. There is nowhere to even go to practice it.

Idk, I am feeling dejected and like I will not pass the N3.

It’s the beginning of the long weekend, and oh boy do I fear for my reviews. I am going to try to get back into reading since I fell off the wagon while I was sick, but that will unfortunately only be available to me Sunday night and Tuesday. Going to Izumo in Shimane with a couple friends Saturday and Sunday, then hiking Daisen on Monday!

I think I am gonna take a break from 内の魔導士は可愛すぎる to read something else for a bit. Probably My Love Story With Yamada-kun. I just want some gaming terms since I also started playing FFXIV again on a Japanese server (Ifrit!)

I am still here btw. I had to slow some things down because retention was failing, and I have been practicing a lot with Tobira because I noticed my reading on my last practice test was meh.

For N3 grammar I am currently looking at 10 ghosts/0 beginner/only 5 adept which is great.

Vocab is what mainly took a back burner. We are sitting at 1585/2000 learned so far, which is not great, but I am trying to remind myself we are looking for a pass, not perfection.

Finished my huge pile of reviews, so I may actually pull up Wanikani for the first time in months. My last practice test didn’t go as well for kanji as I expected, but it also feels a little late to try to go through again. For some reason I have a hard time using Anki too, so it is not as if I can realistically grab an Anki deck though. I have legit never stuck with Anki for more than like three days.

Welp, my first JLPT is over and I don’t think I passed. I think I understood well enough, but I got overconfident and didn’t study listening because I am decent at that irl, but didn’t think about learning the forms of the questions. Welp, now I know.

Onto N2! Fortunately, or maybe unfortunately, that means I have way more options to study. Need to do more immersion for sure, and also pick WK back up. Getting through my backlogs will suck though lol. However, did my first three N2 grammar points today! Still working through N3 vocab, but turned it down to 15 per day.

Oh!! I forgot to add!!

Sunday, I have a not-date! I’d really like it to be a date, but I wasn’t ready to ask for that lmao. But that means plenty of Japanese practice on Sunday because I’ll be working on getting to know my coworker. I’m super nervous, not just because I kinda have a crush on him, but just because I haven’t talked one-on-one with a Japanese person outside of a store or work in a while. What do I even talk about??? AHHHHH.

Shoulda gone to the host club to practice my conversational skills last time I was in Tokyo. Alas.

Ahhhh summer break, time for way too much Japanese studying. Will my brain die? Probably. Plans involve catching up on Bunpro, WK (where I am sitting at 1600 reviews lol), and reading manga and making custom decks on here.

Between JLPT study burnout and also having maybe date, I have been trying to catch up. Officially started N2 grammar, but going slowly.

I am running into some issues where I need to reevaluate how I am learning.

Basically, I am spending too much time on bunpro and I can’t dig out of Wanikani AND immerse AND continue learning new things on WK/BP. Since I am studying for N2’s July test, I think I want to take the time I have right now before the December test really immersing.

SO, right now I have a weird system for Bunpro. When my beginner grammar drops below 10, THEN I study three more points. Similar for vocab, but that is 100 beginner with 25 new words (10 from immersion, 15 from N2 vocab deck). I will not change grammar, but I think I will chip away at vocab until we are at 50 beginner and then start adding more. This will slow my SRS down a little here so I can switch some of that to WK.

On top of that, I have been a little unhappy with my body recently so I think I am gonna start a Hard(ish) 75 and put Japanese learning into it. Mine won’t be as intense as the standard challenge and have days built in for nomikai (we don’t have many though) and traveling (Nov 8, Hiroshima day trip weee), extra 30 minutes of walking a day minimum, and 10 pages of reading or other study (since I am still trying to dig my way out of SRS hell). If I fail in the 75 days, I restart.

Also can’t believe I forgot to add I passed the JLPT? Score was low but I got As in all sections, so that felt good.

Okay yes I have decided on my Hard(ish) 75 rules

1500 cal max (TDEE calculators are all over for me but this should put me in a deficit regardless)
30 minutes of extra walking
10 pages of reading/45 min of watching or playing/150 SRS reviews (pick one)

Things planned like my business trip, the Hiroshima day trip, nomikai where food is beyond my planning ability (I am not planning the day trip) don’t count, but I have to add those extra days to the end.

So right now it’s looking technically like Hardish 80 because of mystery bento for bunkasai. I still have to try and be healthy though.

Most of these things will likely go over every day (minus cals obv) given I watch shows while walking and stuff like that and how into immersion or SRS I get. But I am actually starting today! LET’S GO

I am officially on day 8 of my challenge that is doomed to fail (family is making me visit for the holidays), but I am sticking to it until then and restarting after vacation. However, for the first time in forever, I have ZERO Bunpro reviews and a full day of work with nothing to do.

LET’S FINALLY CHIP AWAY AT THAT WANIKANI.

Kinda wanna revisit my studying goal. It will officially be put into place Sunday since I already surpassed it today and tomorrow is my Hiroshima trip, but I feel I could be doing much more to dig out of SRS hell and continue learning.

Raising SRS to 250 minimum/1 manga chapter/same watch time.

Currently at 15 bunpro reviews and (sigh) 649 WaniKani reviews.

I can finally see me start to unbury myself. I had a little catch up due to the Hiroshima trip but I am at zero reviews and have been adding my adjusted number as needed.

Wanikani we are slowly but surely making it out. Currently at 493 reviews and I learned some of the things that were added during my break. I really want to add stuff from this level and the previous level but I am gonna wait until I am in the 100s. Also keeping it low at probably 10 per day I think.
