Book collector rehab (actually reading what you own accountability thread)

I was thinking of leaving it for a bit later since I think its likely a bit above my comfortable level, but if I had a support group it might be a different story…

Work is quiet until January now so I have more reading energy

If you guys want to start any casual book clubs then I’d be happy to drop by occasionally! I’m sure other Bunpro staff would also be happy to join in sometimes, depending on the book selection.

Some of these books look pretty good…
I might have to…look em up on kindle…

I definitely recommend reading it alongside the audiobook if you can. I just finished the second novel that way and it was much easier to understand than when I attempted without it. Just gives you more context to who is speaking and how something is being said.

Oh, thanks for the tip!! Where did you find the audiobook?

Wow, it’s been busy in here!

Are you, too, a victim of the liminal space they call “bookoff”? But yeah, like @nminer said, 60 volumes is really good! I think you can be pleased with that regardless of how big the rest of your to-read pile is. Also, I’m kind of cackling at that last manga name.

And speaking of nminer - I’ve gotten a few articles/ads about that exhibit! I haven’t gone myself (never played IX), but I’m hoping to hit the XIV Fanfest next year in Tokyo. It’ll all depend on the luck of the lottery, though. :crossed_fingers:

Clearly you must buy a new bookshelf! Or other storage container. Because all of us here definitely need more space for more books, of course

But enabling aside, congrats! I know you were struggling a while back with your series about witches (apologies, but it’s 8 am and I don’t quite remember the name), but it sounds like this one went a lot better for you :muscle:

:handshake:
I also think a JLPT reward should get a pass! You worked hard! お疲れ!

This is so comically ominous, thank you for the laugh this morning <3

Well I certainly couldn’t depose you, I’m even worse! I think you’ll simply have to keep ruling all of us here in book jail.

Unfortunately I don’t have any lovely progress to report like you guys - I thought I was getting into the quiet season for December/January, but a few last things have popped up and I don’t expect a lot of reading time. If I get lucky though, I’ll make sure to come give a status report!

Just created a separate post to see if anyone else is interested: Gauging Interest - 魔女の宅急便 (Kiki’s Delivery Service) Bookclub.

If it seems like more people want to join, I’ll set up a proper post in the Book Clubs category.

Guys… how much jailtime would one hypothetically get for not reading a single page of a book for three weeks straight? Asking for a friend of course :eyes: They have their reasons… Haa

On another note, I’ve come back from the grave at the mention of reading Kiki together… and since I’m lacking motivation to do any reading on my own lately, I’d be happy to join in :sparkles:

In any language? 3 days in the hole.
In Japanese specifically? let’s make it a week.

Yes well, the lack of reading in Japanese miiiight have been caused by excessive reading in another language… but i wouldn’t know anything about that, i totally did not get obsessed with a select number of webnovels recently

…i should probably set up some ‘bare minimum’ goal for times like this

Mostly Mandarake and cheap Mercari or Yahoo auctions listings. Whenever I figured out I can actually reliably read whatever manga I want in Japanese there was a scramble to buy some of my favorite series without physical English releases, or stuff I wanted to read with no TL. If there was a Bookoff close by I might be in even more danger…
Finished the first volume of Watanare. Silly yuri funtimes, the MC is a dork. Will have to get the rest in the semidistant future.

Three weeks of hard labor in the Anki Mines.

Well to make up for my lack of reading the past few weeks, I have read and finished book One of Koizumi! Last couple chapters got super technical with the vocab so I didnt add everything. Just a few words that might be good in the day to day. But the manga gives a little recipe at the end of chapter 9 to upgrade how you make your ramen noodles. I might try one since Ive been on a homemade ramen kick recently.

could you please make some ramen for me too?

Fruits Basket is on sale for 77 yen on Bookwalker at this very moment and… I may have bought the first 4 volumes with my coins…

But my coins were going to expire this month! I had to use them! It’s basically free money!

Thanks for the heads up! Picked up the whole series for $10 usd… :grinning:

Living in the US, that’s by far the cheapest I’ve been able to get my paws on any Japanese content.

For sure. I wish I had access to Bookoff and their 100 yen manga.

I want to go back to Japan…

Conversely, I’m in the UK right now visitng friends and family for Christmas and I’m going to have to stop going to English bookshops as I’ve bought maybe about 20 books since I’ve been here…

That’s weird, I checked Bookwalker just now and none of them were on sale. I guess the sale ended.

Yeah, it was only for one day (the 11th) for some reason. I thought about getting the rest of the series, but the 11th has ended in Japan so that decision has been made for me.

I’m dealing with the same issue. Back in Canada for the holidays and I may have brought an extra suitcase just for English books. . . Thank you JAL for your generous baggage policy!

(But this is a Japanese book rehab thread, so it’s fine, right?)
