The way I see it, if a book interests you even if it’s too high of a level, it’s good to at least try to skim it. If you don’t have any idea what’s going on, at least you’ve built some familiarity with the words used. Come back later and see if you can read more.
Yeah so not gonna lie I stress bought a few books. Volume 5 of 恐怖コレクター and the first ふしぎ駄菓子屋 銭天堂 book. I bought the ふしぎ駄菓子屋 switch game awhile back, but I really wanted to read some of the books before I really play it. 恐怖コレクター is just a comfort read.
Work has been busy, my weekend will be very busy, and my ankle has been hurting for months. Went to see someone about the ankle and they really weren’t that helpful. It may be very slowly getting better (no thanks to that podiatrist
), but it’s been frustrating.
Bookoff, the frenemy off us all… My aforementioned crime was prompted by my friend being like “Hey I need to pick up some clothes for a costume, do you want to hit the [Bookoff] Super Bazaar with me?” And of course my fate was sealed as soon as I said yes. My manga shelf is actually so full at this point that I’m considering getting another one to give myself more space
I have a minor case of this myself, but I’m at least doing okay at not buying more of a given series until I’m confident I like it.
Perhaps there was something in the air this week! Looks like quite a few of us had a bit of a relapse, lol. I do agree with some of the others though - it doesn’t hurt to take a look at it, even if it might have to go further down the to-ready list.
Edit: Good morning, I see you’re also online at the moment XD
@obscureniche Hope your ankle feels better soon!
I think we can blame the stress of the JLPT surely! Even if you didn’t take it, there’s mysterious stress vibes around, and we all had to comfort-buy books to cope, right?
I bought kikis delivery service because I think its probably the kind of content I will enjoy, and something called nyannyan detectives or something of the like. Theyll arrive shortly so I’m looking forward to getting into them, reading a page, giving up, and ruing the day I was born. Sorry, did I say all that aloud? I meant I look forward to reading them. Haha. ha. Help.
I was gonna say, surely the thing in the air stressing us out wouldn’t be a test we’re concerned about…
Oop! Yeah, I was definitely, for sure, 100% stressed because of the JLPT that I definitely took this round because I most certainly did not miss the application period because I was waffling. Uh huh. That’s definitely the reason. Absolutely. Totally JLPT-stress that had me buying more books.
I think if we knew how to save you, we wouldn’t be in here ourselves
Oh hey I didn’t know this was a thread.
So I own a lot of manga in Japanese. Somewhere between 200 and 250 volumes are unread. Going off a rough estimate I’m at around 60 physical JP volumes read this year so I’m chipping away at it but the situation may get worse before it gets better. This doesn’t include some self-published books and art books I have but that’s more manageable.
Right now I’m reading through the new big release of New Game and volume one of わたしが恋人になれるわけないじゃん、ムリムリ!(only bought vol. one) so hoping to get done with those this month.
I’m not much of a Gundam fan in general, although the magazine is indeed named after the Gundam concept of the same name.
I’d say the magazines are about N1 - 2 somewhere, since they lack furigana even for the manga serialisation - a manga called The Five Star Stories is serialised in the magazine.
As for how I’m going, I filled a computer folder with images from the books I had and polished them off in time for the test. I put one picture for each day before the test, although I did slack off a few days, so the day before the JLPT, I was reading a few pages without doing the challenge proper, although I did mine those pages for vocab like the others.
Aside from that, since my first update, I did finish some library books (I won’t mention those, since the vast majority are ENG even when they’re manga). Also, I opened the NewType magazine parcel as a post-JLPT reward and while I’ve flicked through the magazines to respond to someone in this thread, I mostly haven’t read the bits I wanted…(due to the neglected Spoon.2Di, natch.)
Well, I made it through 26% of 恐怖コレクター 5 over the weekend and am 16% through 本好き 1 now. I’d say progress on 本好き is going better than I expected. I know I’m still in part of the book I’ve already read before, but back when I read it the first time my goal was to get through 1% of the book a day and I wasn’t even always able to do that. It looks like in the past 7 days I’ve read 9% and I definitely could have read more. Yay increased reading proficiency!
I’ve made it to page 55 of ヴァイオレット・エヴァーガーデン, which puts me into Chapter 2! Going better than I expected some days, worse others. I had what felt like a cheat day at some point since my 5~ pages were light on text and two were a two-page illustration lol.
The other book that I’ve been reading at a lax pace, I’ve only advanced five pages total, which is certainly worse. But hey, progress is progress!
I care a little the manga but wanna read more about the process the builders did. Maybe once I get through some N3 Grammar I’ll start farming one of the books I have. I figured the hardest part would mostly just be the very specific vocab. Whelp, I have a good goal to work towards then.
as for my update, I think I left Ramen in the car that I brought to the shop to get fixed by mistake. And its been like 2 weeks I leave for a vacation in like a week. so if I dont get it back by then its gonna be a HOT minute before I can start again. Maybe Ill just pick up from Book two
Haven’t made much progress on my two new mushoku tensei volumes however I have learned a hundred new vocab words on the side that should help me (This is my excuse for this week).
60 volumes in a year is pretty impressive! I feel like if you’re going through that many, then it’s understandable to have a larger backlog you can pull from. Out of curiosity, how do you find the time to read regularly? Also, any particular favourites from the stuff you’ve read recently?
No real updates from me this week. Haven’t had much time to read through any of my backlog, but I did end up doing a bit of reading over the weekend at an exhibit I went to. Managed to run to the FFIX 25th Anniversary Exhibit this weekend and got to read more about the development of the game, which was really fun.
I actually had a big brain idea and found Koizumi in Japanese online (With FURIGANA) so I have gone and added Chapter 6! So I can continue onto Book two when I go home.
I’m actually already a third of the way through my new book that arrived yesterday (nyanyan tanteidan) and I am pretty chuffed with myself.
However, I am running out of space to keep books. What do.
I go into an office for work a few times a week so I try to do my Anki/BP reps and get some reading done if I run out of work. Can get sidetracked making small talk but it adds up. As for favorite series I read recently, Boku wa Beatles and Sketchbook are really good (although I’m still reading the latter slowly, and whenever I do I end up adding less than useful insect and plant names to my anki deck).
Haven’t played that FF but the exhibition sounds cool, hope they had some cool in-development stuff on display.
I made the “mistake” of stopping at Kinokuniya on my way to the test site. But hey, I wanted to reward myself for all the hard work I’d been putting in for the JLPT! And although I’ve read another two books since my last post (!), I regret to inform you all that my rate for buying books continues to outpace my rate of reading
I may need to quit this thread
Personally, I’d say that deserves a pass as a reward XD
I think JLPT day might have to qualify as this rehab centres version of “the purge” LMAO
…I also bought several books yesterday myself…
