Book collector rehab (actually reading what you own accountability thread)

…I might have just commited the book buying crime of the century.

So… I just spend around 1200 yen on manga due to sales and 40% coupon, that’s less than 10 USD!

I bought nineteen volumes of manga.

Now, please excuse me because I need to get to running before the authorities catch up with me. :running_woman:

Can’t help but notice that this thread is becoming the literal opposite of its title :see_no_evil: It’s like ○○anonymous meeting where 90% of attendees are dealers

Late book update but I would love to hear what everyone has been reading this first week of the new year!

I started and finished なんだかんだ名探偵 which was fairly easy. I am finding it good lately to mix materials of varying difficulties- for example I’ve been alternating between Mikus Real Japanese Podcast (some put this at n4?) with Yuyu Nihongo and Sayas Japanese Podcast (n3-n2? Maybe?) Doing the same with books has helped me feel less suffering from Kikis Delivery Service hahahah.

That being said, sometimes I wonder if I should be doing some more intensive reasing over extensive reading. Theres a few grammar points I have kind of learned on bunpro that I think I just gloss over in reading… but also… I am tired…

Gold star machine is broken right now but you get ten for being the only person in this thread to not buy new books

I have returned from my vacation with good and bad news

The good news, I read a doreamon Katakana loan word book (Which was really cool and I recommend picking up those doraemon language books)

The bad news, I left it in the home country so I cant even reference it now and I wanted to mine from it because it gave good descriptions in japanese.

But I guess now I gotta acquire the witch book for our book club

Hi guys! Sorry for the long silence, but I live again! Back from Tokyo and winter break, phew. First of all: あけましておめでとう!Let’s keep at it this year!

Maybe we can pull on the power of friendship to counter our backsliding

I’ve found this helpful too! I think having something I can move more quickly through helps to guard against the “Oh god I don’t know anything after all” feeling, and if I’m tired I can get into a simpler book easier than one I know will be a struggle.

The best reading is the reading you can do, remember! I also think it’s the same thing as the reading program I remember from elementary school - you can read one big book for 10 points or 4 small books for three points each, as long as you get to 10 points. It’s all helpful.

Given the number of casualties recently, this is a victory in and of itself :sparkles:

Oh no we disappointed the birb parent :c

Hmmm…hey real quick can I see your hands. Specifically your fingers, which are definitely not crossed behind your back-

Sillies aside, my own reading update is nonexistent BUT. I went to Comiket!

…And I DIDN’T add anything to my collection! The only book I bought was a small art pamphlet book thing It was ノボリ・Ingo and クダリ・Emmet from PKM BW&BW2 themed, if you’re curious which had very little text, and I did in fact read said text before returning from Tokyo. So. I will take that win, and hopefully be able to do some reading this week after I prep for upcoming classes.

Congrats to everyone who managed some reading at the end of the year/start of the new year, even if (especially if?) it was hand-in-hand with some criminal acquisitions.

Between pre-orders and some new year sales, I’ve picked up 8 volumes of manga this month so far… but I have also read 5 from the backlog, so it’s not terrible.

Doing catch-up with 花野井くんと恋の病, which I own all the volumes of and just finished vol 16 (I haven’t read the whole thing in Japanese, I swapped from English around vol 12). Also trying to catch up with おじさまと猫 this month before the new volume arrives, finished vol 13 last week, so just two more to catch up!

I don’t know if I can get away with blaming you but so far this year I hadn’t bought any books and you made me remember that sales exist… the book I wanted wasn’t on sale though… I bought it anyway… sigh… how many years are on my sentence I wonder

ACK! I’ve been caught by the book-buying police! :frowning:

Hi, I’m Rhynn and I’m addicted to buying books. In my defence, I genuinely intend to read and work through all of them! And I’ve started… most of them.

In terms of study books… I’m working through Genki (FINISHED book 1! Started book 2 and finished the first chapter only yesterday!) and Minna no Nihongo (for the extra practice and because it’s fun). I have Quartet and Tobira ready and waiting for me - I will get to those eventually (just don’t ask me when). And I NEED the kanji textbooks and reading practice textbooks and writing practice textbooks and the extra grammar books and the JLPT practice books and just HOW do you expect me to perfect my anki decks without the dictionaries? Which reminds me I saw an interesting book about particles a few days ago…

Ahem, where was I.

I finished reading the となりのトトロ アニメ絵本 last week - that means I can buy two more, right? Right?! I just went with 千と千尋の神隠し for now, the Howl’s Moving Castle one is sold out… Though I did get the シネマ・コミック for both となりのトトロ and Howl’s moving castle. Finished トトロ already though, so I’m doing well!

Let’s just not discuss the five volumes of よつばと! that have recently somehow appeared on my bookshelf. I’ve read a chapter so far though so that’s a good reason to buy more books… right?

I am choosing to ignore the unread graded readers and the light novels sitting on my bookshelf because those are still above my level. Which obviously means I need more of them as motivation to learn more so I can read them someday. Obviously.

What, my steam Japanese games backlog? I have no idea what you are talking about officer please don’t–

I’m off to jail for a while, aren’t I?

OK I have decided that whoever first mentioned Natively in this thread is evil because now I’ve discovered a whole bunch of new things I want to add to my physical bookshelf and I don’t have the space!

making lists on natively is my alternative to buying ^^

I come here proud to say I finished my first read of the year, volume 1 of 台所のドラゴン. I’ve already started the second volume. Making steady progress on Nancy Drew still. 26% through that now. I also started キノの旅2(LN), which was probably a mistake, but I really enjoy that series so oh well.

For my 2026 goals I’m trying read at least 1 volume of manga a week and 1 chapter book a month. This gives me a lot of wiggle room where I can potentially over read some weeks/months and take a little longer if I need to other times. It gives my brain a little breathing room, but still the direction it needs.

To make my ADHD life even easier, I’ll only be putting 2 PDFs of the manga volumes in my shared google folder at a time. (I make my manga into pdfs while I’m at home and then put them in the shared folder to read them at work) No distractions or other choices. I did the same with ttsu reader, taking out almost everything aside from what I’m currently reading. I mostly read manga volumes in downtime at work, where I don’t have easy reading access in the first place because most sites are blocked, so I think only putting a few things in my folder will force me to focus.

あけおめ!

Jumping on the “good news bad news” club. Good news is, I didn’t buy any Japanese books over the holiday (English books are another issue, but I actually read those so. . . ).

Bad news is, other than the chapters for Kiki book club, I have done almost no Japanese reading in over a month. Was back in Canada for the holidays and didn’t bring any books with me.

But now that I’m back in Japan, I’m going to try to get back on the horse! My Japanese reading goals for this year are:

  • Read two novels
  • Read five manga volumes

Going to finally take and try to pass N1 this year, so realistically going to be allocating more time towards that. If I pass the test in July, I’ll update the reading goals to be a bit more ambitious for the second half of the year.

Soooooo I talked to my doctor yesterday (for reasons) and uh. She (among other things) told me to read before bed, at least an hour before going to sleep. So now I am doctor ordered to get more books.

Help :joy:
