And this is why katakana words should be included in the vocab decks. Why are katakana words sometimes so hard to figure out?!

Yeah I always find it a little wild when people complain about katakana in vocab decks - Japanese has lots of katakana words where the meaning is a little different or may even have totally shifted (looking at you, イルミネーション and カンニング) from the original English, or where the katakana is coming from a non-English language (バイト, for example). Or sometimes the katakana used is a slightly different pronunciation from your personal accent - don’t ask me how long it took me to remember to say メキシコ and not メクシコ。
And that’s not even getting into the fact that if English isn’t your native language, even the words that are straight transliterations can be a lot trickier.
Yeahhhhhhh. Yeah.
Unfortunately I do not have an actual reading update today - still fighting the class prep current - but I have at least un-vacationed my wanikani, so that’s something.

I-Is it not “illumination”, as in lighting?
I actually have something to report for once. Finished マグメル深海水族館 2 and should be able to finish up 見える子ちゃん 4 this morning. Also making good progress on 恐怖コレクター 8 and finished up the chapter of キノの旅 2 I was in. (the one about the flying machine) I had been stuck in that chapter for a little while and it stagnated my progress.

That’s the origin English, yeah, but it’s used more like we might use lights or light display - so around Christmas, where I might say I’m going to see “Christmas lights” or a “light display,” my students might say “I go see illumination!” or tell me that there’s “Christmas illumination” in Kobe.
Which, yes, a light display is a form of illumination but that’s not quite the meaning they mean. They use it more to mean the lights/displays themselves, not the light (the illumination) given off by them.
It’s not completely different but it’s a case of the usage shifting a little bit.
But congrats on the progress!

I actually had a GREAT Doreamon Katakana book that taught all sorts of everyday useful katakana words and what the original word in Japanese was. I LOVED it and then forgot it in America when I visited. I might buy another one and just have two.
But because of it I started calling my photography hobby 写真機(しゃしんき) and it throws everyone under the age of like 40 off. They have ZERO idea what Im talking about and I love it lol
But yea, I think having a separate deck for katakana makes sense because I can remember loan words easier and its just a matter of switching my understanding. Which is easier for a word that sounds like English to me. Even if my pronunciation is garbage.

So, apparently Bookwalker gives out coins if you don’t buy anything from them for a certain amount of time. Isn’t that nice of them? They also put manga on sale for 100 yen or less, and sometimes it’s actually something you want! Isn’t that nice of them?

Ah, but then you get to the onomatopoeia…
I mean, to be fair, English also does things like “chai tea” that I’m sure are somewhat absurd in the languages they originate from.
Well, at least I’m in good company - between classes and a nasty little cold(?) (I dunno man my throat hurts and I feel icky but there’s no fever/runny-sneezy nose/cough/whatever. I’m assuming I picked something up from my resident plague rats students, bless them) I have gotten 0 pages read as well.

I have concluded that my headache might be due to the yellow sand (as it is now yellow sand season) so it might be affecting you too!
Cause for me my headache is mostly sinus pain and I think thats from the sand being an irritant

Ohhhhh I do remember seeing a yellow sand warning a few days ago! I didn’t even consider it because I don’t usually have issues for pollen and similar warnings, but that would match up pretty well. Especially since I’ve had my bedroom window cracked for a breeze while I sleep

I actually dont have a problem with remember the words of “noises” they flow pretty easy for me. Of course the first time I hear it I have no idea depending on context but after that Im pretty good. I wouldnt even then a deck for that is important nor worth the time studying.
As for reading on my end, by the nines does my Speech Pronunciation professor seemingly hate us. This class I think suffers so far from “What I know is so common and easy I assume it is for everyone else too” syndrome. So doing the assignments and readings are difficult coupled with my own studies. Absolutely gonna have to update how I do my studies just for timing alone.
In other news though, Ive been speaking more so やった。
