Book collector rehab (actually reading what you own accountability thread)

I actually started with the English version before the anime started! I think the anime stayed very faithful to the manga. It’s all lovely!

I’ve read the first…three volumes, I think, in Japanese? It’s definitely a slow build - I think I could enjoy it pretty well in English, but in Japanese it’s harder because it’s a decent amount of rather difficult reading without a lot of immediate payoff to keep my brain happy, lol.

I do love Stark, though. Pathetic little guy

Pretty poor week for as far as mining and output goes but I’m finally onto my last section of manga! I saved the best for last :guitar:

Thank you! All the other regulars had a PFP and I was feeling left out lol.

Ive known a few people who struggled to get past episode 3 or 4 because of that but its a wonderful story of a young girl becoming a long distance orbital cannon. And yea, Its definitely hard and Im relying on that fact Ive seen it a few times with subs and a handful without to understand what it happening and put things into order.

I’ve been too lazy recently (admittedly mostly because I’ve been so busy elsewhere and got myself addicted to Helldivers so was playing that all the time in my spare time), but today I have decided to sit myself down in my local coffee shop and finish off reading my current manga.

Stark is great, it feels so rare for a cowardly hero character to actually embody the heroic part of their character, but unlike so many others who only do heroic things when they’re absolutely forced to, often causing trouble for others or in some cases getting people injured or killed whilst they whinge about being afraid, he just sucks it up and gets on with it in spite of his fear because he knows he has to do it.

Definitely one of my favourite characters.

Weird part of “actually reading what you own” are the little ads and things I find inside
I just finished a volume of Manga with an ad “on sale 2018年8月25日発売”
And an survey valid until 2025年12月

So I finished all 6 volumes of Somali and 魔女フレンズ

Crimes have been committed. Books have been purchased. More is planned.

But enough about me, wait until you hear what my traveling friend is planning. One of her favorite series is March Comes in like a Lion and she is planning to buy the 18 volumes of the series since the English ones are being too slowly translated BUT SHE CAN’T EVEN READ JAPANESE LIKE AT ALL. AND I’M NOT TALKING HER OUT OF IT.

I mean, March comes in like a lion is a really good series, who says you can’t borrow them to profit after she’s done with her purchase ? :innocent:

(Also that’s hilarious about your friend. I guess she could scan the text and use a translator?)

Yeah, he’s in that fun category of a character who is genuinely quite afraid but also wants to help people. I didn’t get very far into the series so I don’t know how his characterization continues, but I did like what I saw in the first few volumes.

I went through my whole collection a while back and the number of those things I pulled out of them was kind of absurd??? And that’s having still missed a few on accident! But it’s very funny, for sure, to see all the dates from like…4 or 8 years ago XD

This counts! After all, if you finish the books you’ve borrowed, then they’re no longer taking up space in a 積読 pile, right?

Jail buddy! Although actually I’ve been good about books since my last crime, but that’s mostly because I knew I would be dropping some big yennies at a pop up store that started yesterday (which I did, oh boy I did).

I realize I haven’t actually reported my last few crime sprees, so

a collective summary if anyone wants to feel better about their own restraint:
  • The special edition manga-version of the 蟲師 movie (at least I think that’s what it is, lol) because I have the rest of the set already and also 蟲師 is so pretttyyyy.
  • A complete set (new) of the Japanese translation of “Ranger’s Apprentice” which goes by アラルエン戦記. That’s, uh…14 volumes, to the set.
  • The hunger games translated set, so 6 volumes.
  • Volume one of ホタルの嫁入り because my recommendations kept throwing it at me and it looks like it could be interesting - mostly depends on if the male lead is a wife guy or creepy about it. We shall see!
  • VOLUMES 1-4 AND 9 of パンプキンシザーズ WHICH I AM SO SO SO EXTREMELY EXCITED TO HAVE FOUND. I’ll probably have to deliberately hunt down the rest of them, because I doubt I’ll be so lucky as to casually find the rest of them for 100 yen each in really good condition the way I did with these. These are so extremely guilt free I can’t believe I just found them on the shelf while I was looking for more アトリエ. Pumpkin Scissors my beloved <3
  • More かみさまはじめました! Continuing to fill in my set of this <3
  • A good chunk of 地獄楽 - I’m not going to be reading it anytime soon because it’s my highest level manga and volume one melted my brain, but I did really like it so I do wanna go ahead and get collect the set. It’s already finished and not absurdly long, anyway.
  • More 地縛少年花子くん! I didn’t originally realize how long this series was, but it’s been a great read so far so I’m not complaining
  • annnnnd some English edition danmei, oops.

Okay but honestly: respect. I don’t know the series in question but I am here for the sheer, pure enthusiasm of this. And hey, maybe this will make her think about learning Japanese? You could have a travel buddy AND a study buddy!

Seconded!

No update at the moment, still getting back on the horse after a game ate my brain for like two weeks, but I’ve been doing my reviews so today might be a good chance for reading once I’ve taken care of a few things

I had finally started reading both 2 “コンビニ人間” and "コーヒーが冷めないうちに” after passing N3 solidly. I actually dropped the former because, despite everyone’s input on it being good N2 prep, it was too difficult( many n1 words and kanji) and rather boring. The latter is pretty solid so far, with an average of 4-5 lookups a page and a crap ton of onomatopoeia, and I am excited to continue reading it. As for my 5-6 volumes of manga on the shelf… well they will have to wait.

Owning up: I bought more books

Some are new volumes from series I already have, some are educational and the rest just sounded interesting :joy:

Apologies in advance for the weird formatting, couldn’t take a picture as they’re at home

I bought the first in the series of the second one, about a just deserts candy shop after I saw the anime on TV a couple years ago… Haven’t read it yet.
