Book collector rehab (actually reading what you own accountability thread)

Been awhile since my last update. Unfortunately, not a lot of movement on the backlog. I finished vol 6 of ヤニ吸う shortly after my last update, but haven’t started vol 7 or anything else from my backlog yet. But I also haven’t bought anything, but only because I have no room on my shelf.

Since I’m finally taking N1 this Dec, I’ve been using the ~45 mins of free time I have before work to study. Rereading through 新完全マスター as well as other random news articles. It’s very dull.

I did start reading 花秘める君のメテオール online this week. It’s uhhhhh a lot more NSFW than I was expecting, and the main character pisses me off, but the art is really pretty :sob:

Yeah, I’ve got the first series, read a few of them and they are about my level. I’ve a few other series from the same author so using them as practice for her writing style.

I’m still kind of at a kids reading level so they’re good for me picking up new vocabulary as well.

I’m liking it, I don’t usually go for magical girls stuff but this has other aspects to it. I kinda lol’d at the end of volume 4 so it’s definitely got it’s moments. The enemies seem pretty well thought out and unique to me so far though I’m not sure if that’s what would usually be in that genre. It’s one I intend to continue with :slightly_smiling_face:

Yeah, I’m definitely not a good influence considering my back log :joy: it’ll be a while before I get to reading it but I’ve already put the rest of the series in my basket to purchase.

Well everyone else is definitely doing better than me with my TBR pile so you’re all winners in comparison

Just finished vol 2 of FMA (complete edition, so it’s compiled into 18 volumes) and now I can return the two volumes I borrowed and get the next two hehe

However I did see the full set at Bookoff for 3500 yen and it’s very tempting… at this rate I’d have to wait a couple weeks to borrow the next two volumes, and I reeeeally wanna keep reading…

I inadvertently ran a science experiment on myself it seems…
I am in the process of weening off caffeine until I can quit it completely and the effects really took a toll today I guess as well as skipping some of my other morning routine habits

Yesterday:
Morning stretch + light therapy
Started reading K-On! Shuffle vol.2 just before 8am
Drank roughly 50mg at 10:30am (previously 80+ the days before)
Finished 110/120 pages by 11am

Today:
No stretch or light therapy
Didn’t even go up the stairs to get water since I had some left from the night before
Started reading Girls Scat Orchestra! just before 8am (same exact page count and format)
No caffeine yet
Finished a whopping 50/120 pages by 11am

The caffeine timing is mostly irrelevant since it was just the very last 30 minutes but the long term withdrawal effects are really coming through now plus getting up and moving in the morning also seems to have its merits. Hopefully it’s worth it in the end because it kinda sucks to have my input volume cut in half even if it’s just for a few days (if I’m lucky). Maybe when I’m back to normal I can give another no-caffeine reading speed update

Using my old Japan address in Tokyo, I was able to purchase a few items on Amazon Japan Kindle. While this saved me some money, it has opened an entire new universe of 積読 mischief opportunity. At least I can read 森崎書店の日々.

I feel like FMA is such a good/classic series that I don’t know why you wouldn’t want to buy it! But also jail if you do

Thats what makes it so dangerous… I probably read (most of, I didnt quite finish it) it in English 15 years ago, and it’s even better than I remember…

Yeah, I’m not usually a huge magical girl reader either - honestly I think what caught my attention was her spooky friend on the cover. This may be climbing up the list of future crimes…

I think you’re the one person here who has me beat on sheer number of physical copies? (Unless I’m forgetting someone else with A StackTM.) But I dunno how our reading paces compare, lol. We’re just the collective warning sign for everyone else

slides out a beanbag and turns on the electric kettle in jail

For science! (Best of luck with your de-caffeination!)

pulls out another beanbag and starts a bag of popcorn in the jail microwave

Small update, but I did get through…around 1/3 or 1/2 of a 地縛少年花子くん volume on Friday - can’t check exactly how much bc I then proceeded to forget it at home today

But I’ve got an アトリエ volume with me, so I’ll put that on the docket instead.

Quick today update: got through a little under half of アトリエ volume 5! Started off strong and then started to go a bit cross eyed near the end, but I was doing my best to stick to minimal vocab-searching.

Also volume 4 and 5 are very quickly confirming why a certain grumpy man’s job exists, huh. Geez.

Mine was the exact same. I saw someone else reading it and it was Shade that caught my attention. The artwork is pretty decent and it’s a mix of both styles but melds pretty well.

Not sure on anyone elses Stack but I think you have me beat on reading pace this year as I’ve been struggling with that (had a lot of personal stuff going on, dealing with bereavement helping family and trying to settle into new stuff at work as well as home ), especially over the last several months. I seem to hit strong at the start and end of each year then fizzle out in the middle so hoping next year is better for reading :crossed_fingers:

I managed about 70 odd manga early this year before I burnt out (was going for 180 across 25 series) and it’s never recovered so my pace is pretty slow atm. Think I’ve been reading the same 2 books for the last 4 months with very little progress

I found a Japanese friend.
We’re trading my copy of Somali to Mori for his copy of FMA 鋼錬(はがれん)

Creepy (handsome) bestie is just such a good trope, lol.

I don’t think I’ve read 70 books this year yet, actually, although I think I could do so by the end of the year as long as I don’t completely fall off the horse for two months. (I’m somewhere in the 60s right now, I think? I don’t actually keep count and my natively record is iffy because I only update it periodically and in batches, but I’ll trust it as an approximate.)

But regardless, the point’s really just to have fun reading through all the cool stuff we already own! Your collection will still be there for you once life calms back down and you have time to read again. And in the meantime you can sit in the “bad influences” corner with me while we cheer everyone on :confetti_ball:

…and all this ハガレン talk has me remembering that I need to pick up more of 黄泉のツガイ…

I know it’s a book for children, It feels really good that I got the correct answer for the first round of 絶対絶命ゲーム

It does work though :joy:

I was reading a lot of furigana filled manga between calls at work and several times managed to finish a few volumes in a day when we were quiet but calls have ramped up again and between that and some personal stuff that’s happened, it was just too much.

That’s not to say I fully understood all of the ones I read but it certainly helped my reading speed which has taken a dive since I burned out.

Got my beanbag and some snacks ready :joy:

I did manage 60 pages yesterday for Dragon Quest Monster + volume 3 (manga). It’s one I started back in July iirc

So Im curious. Most/All of us have physical copies of books. But does anyone read on an E-reader?

Ive been doing a lot of English for-fun reading, and wouldnt mind being able to switch to using an E-reader. Ive been reading manga on my phone and having a bigger screen would also be nice.

My question though is, if you have one and read manga on it, can you dictionary function the kanji? Or is that only allowed with book books. LNs and the such.
