Compared to most people here I have very few Japanese books only (at least if I only count mine, not the ones from my boyfriend) - But given I am very much a beginner I have not read any of them. Most of them were bought thanks to autism latching on to something despite not having the skill at all to read even one sentence in it. Here is my list in order of how I wanna tackle them:
2 beginner textbooks (one focusses on japanese in mangas, one is more general)
The first 2 issues of ダンジョン飯 (manga, strictly speaking my boyfriend’s but I’m interested too)
The first 6 issues of 今際の国のアリス (manga)
A book of short stories for Japanese language learners
The first 3 books of 薬屋のひとりごと (light novel)
I’m the type of person that spends hours on a page reading things far beyond my level - I started reading Harry Potter in Italian with almost no prior knowledge xD So I hope I will be able to fight my way through a manga once I worked my way through the text books.
Anyway, let’s see how much of the first textbook I can work my way through till the end of next week! Hopefully quite some bit given I learned a bunch of grammar and vocab on Bunpro.
Those are my future goals I’m working towards, I don’t count them for my to-be-read pile yet until I have the skill to get through them. In the meantime they make me feel good by looking pretty on my bookshelves.
I found Genki textbook + Kanji Damage was enough to read manga.
Because I learned Kanji, I could guess the meanings of most words from their Kanji.
And N5 grammar is enough to get started understanding the short sentences.
I mean that’s a pretty good price, I can hardly blame you…
I do too, but I find that the app sometimes has a really hard time loading if I’m in a spot with weak reception. (And for some reason, bookoffs are almost always half-dead zones?!) So I’ve started using the webpage, but switching to the “covers” listing so I can still just scroll through everything just like the app.
whistles innocently
Good luck!!!
slides books 2-5 behind me
To be fair, that’s a really good already read pile! Both in taste and quantity, imo!
Welcome in! And don’t worry, I think a lot of us here are prone to uh…over-enthusiasm, let’s call it. You’re in good company!
God I love the feeling of looking at a good, full bookshelf…
Belated update, because I’ve been in Tokyo since Friday night for a video game event. Very fun, but also extremely exhausting, oof.
I did get through volume 2 of Dandelion on my shinkansen ride up, though!
I was gonna read more on the ride back too but uh. Naptime happened.
Also I may have committed a few teeny crimes in kinokuniya on the way back. But compared to my usual sprees this was itty bitty. Only 9 books! That’s nothing, right?
Yeah, makes sense to switch to the web page then. Most of my ordering is done online (no book offs in the UK unfortunately ) so it’s less of an issue for me.
I’ll try adding those later, I’m just fixing access to my books after going ham on it yesterday.
Hope you enjoy them when you read the rest of them. I still need to read volume 5 once my books are sorted (just need to finish moving some boxes of miniature models then I should have space to fit the last order that arrived (though I’ve already got another on hold )
Thanks, I’m definitely gonna need it at this rate

Back in jail for buying a few ebooks in English (only 2!) but tbf, the kettle was on, a beanbag was free and I needed a seat after spending more money as a reward for clearing the majority of my office and I am reading them
Almost done freeing my Japanese books from behind the barrier preventing me from accessing them though that should be done within the next 4 hours
I saw that! Don’t think you’re going to get away with that just because you used small text! sits you down on a bean bag with your TBR pile sigh sits down beside you with my TBR pile
I’m very proud to report that I went to two Bookoffs this weekend and didn’t buy a single book. (This may or may not have been due to logistical reasons of being unable to carry any books at the time, but I’ll take it!)
I also finished the second half of vol 2 of Kamisama Kiss and finished vol 3 yesterday. Going to try to knock vol 4 out this week, as I’m going on a trip this weekend/part of next week and likely won’t get any reading done until I’m back.
Mostly Dandelion, as you can see, but the next few Firefly and a new work by the same author as Dengeki Daisy! It looks more fantasy/supernatural than DD which definitely has my attention (Not pictured is vol. 41 of Yona, which was a bookoff snag from earlier in the day.)
And good job escaping bookoff unscathed! Also Kamikiss my beloved…I’ll get to you eventually…
No update for today, got a lot of marking and other stuff to catch up on. But I have some priority targets all ready to roll when I get a moment…
Better not add mine to that mix or everyone will be buried when they topple
Definitely take the win
I’m only not buying more this month because I have no more spending money til next month (considering my next book order is about £200 worth for finishing series - most of it is 12 kingdoms )
Nice haul

On a different note, I have now started reading through my TBR starting (or re-starting) ふしぎ駄菓子屋銭天堂 series from book 1 as part of my new reading/ listening study route
I managed to re-read the prologue about 3 times today between calls. It’s gonna be a slow burn through my TBR at this rate
Hang on… why don’t we build a book fort with our TBR piles? We can put the bean bags in the fort and just grab a book off the wall when we want to read something!
