Book collector rehab (actually reading what you own accountability thread)

no reading done this week :I book jail for me…

Congrats to the folks who knocked something off the list! And @obscureniche, glad the thread’s been helping - hopefully it keeps the rest of us on track too.

@Special_Guest Sadly I don’t have much in the way of app recommendations. My lovely mountain-to-climb is all hard copies, so I tend to just tuck one in my bag for work or the train. There may be resources or recommendations elsewhere in the forums though?

And @cafelatte, I’m in jail for the week too right now - haven’t been able to both knock out my daily reviews and avoid distractions well enough to get any reading done so far :sob:

Maybe we’ll earn parole as the week goes on, though!

I was able to carve out some time this weekend and ended up finished vol 3 of Apothecary Diaries and a chapter of マジックツリーハウス:巨大ダコと海の神秘. Yay long weekends!

But more importantly, I want to share that I went to two Book Offs this week and didn’t buy anything! It was heartbreaking, I may never emotionally recover.

Ohh good to know! I didn’t realize it was by the same author as Pandora Hearts, which I also haven’t read but have heard good things about. Might need to pick this one up. After I’ve worked through my current backlog, of course  Also, sorry for the super late reply, work has been hectic recently and I’ve been on Bunpro less than I would like.

Oh I definitely wouldn’t have that sort of willpower - the notepad app on my phone holds a list of things to search for any time I’m in range of one. But good on you for resisting!

And I absolutely recommend Pandora Hearts as well! But make sure to read it if you do try it - the anime was never finished (and may have been getting FMA’d with what they did have, if I remember correctly?) It has some beautiful music for [spoiler’s] song, which I love, but you won’t get the full story without the manga.
Sorry for adding to your list of temptations, though
No worries about the late reply, we’ve all got real life going on!

As for my reading update, I managed to knock out the rest of 傷物の花嫁 volume 8 yesterday - which was only a chapter or two, I think - and an ENTIRE volume of Vanitas today! (Can you tell I didn’t have any classes, lol.)
This does mean I’m tempted to go out and get 傷物の花嫁’s volume 9, but I can’t just leave myself on a cliffhanger…

I’d say this earns me parole for the week, right?

I have managed to misplace my book of Ramen loving koizumi, so unfortunately it will be on hold until I find it again. I also was to busy to read much this week. Getting ready to apply for Grad school and winter holidays will probably keep me pretty busy unfortunately

Well, my Thanksgiving break is over and I’m officially back at work. As the break went on I ended up reading less and less. I did still make it about 7% through both 本好き and 幽霊屋敷の謎 (the second Nancy Drew book).

I have to say, I picked the second Nancy Drew book because I foolishly assumed it would be easier than 本好き and wow was I wrong. The amount of legal terminology going on easily skyrockets the difficulty from 27 to 30+. This is why I kind of hate that Learn Natively applies a difficulty rating to an entire series, instead of book to book. The difficulty for entire series is almost always based on the first book/volume in a series because of that. Though you’d think I would just know better with these books since I’ve read most of the original Nancy Drew books multiple times.

Edit: Apparently I actually have enough credits on english Amazon to buy the kindle version of the second Nancy Drew book. It’s been a hot minute since I’ve used an english copy of a book alongside the japanese one, but I think this time it might be nice to have.

I finally finished Flying Witch volume 1!
In the end, it was nice and cosy and I’m glad I read it.
Now I’m debating whether to read it again (faster this time) or go back to Shirokuma Cafe, which I’m borrowing off a friend.

This week (well, late last week really) I decided to recommit to my ‘at least five pages of a JP novel a day’ challenge as a way to get that backlog down. Reading ヴァイオレット・エヴァーガーデン Volume 1, which is hard but I’ve watched the anime multiple times and adore it, so that helps. I’m at 25 pages of that currently.

I’ve also resumed reading 君には届かない:ぼくらの文化祭, which is a side story light novel for the 君には届かない manga series. Since I already read the manga in Japanese and this is just school life vs fantasy or anything, it’s pretty easy. I had already started this at some point, but currently on page 40. Not been counting it in my 5-day challenge or as committed to it. The goal is to largely pick it up and read while dinner cooks, so even if it’s just a page or two then that’s better than nothing.

Read volume 4 of 薬屋のひとりごと (manga) on Sunday, but haven’t had a chance to read anything else this week.

I do admit that I went out and bought more books this week (vol 5 and 6), but it’s because I want to keep reading this series instead of switching to something else. That’s justified, right? please don’t send me to jail

I will allow it… for now…

Tbh I think continuing on with a series you are enjoying is highly motivational so as long as you read it you may remain out on bail

This is good information to know, because I have a strong desire to continue with the Kiki’s Delivery Service novels, but I’d need to buy them first. I think going through a bunch of the same series at once is extremely helpful for building vocab. And lord knows I need to build more vocab. 本好き is still kicking my butt. :cold_sweat:

Sadly I haven’t gotten any reading done since my last update - it’s been a bit of a rough week focus-wise, if I’m being quite honest. Been having a hard time even tackling my reviews, let alone getting them done with time to spare.

I’m glad to hear of the exception regarding continuing a series - I suppose my next 傷物の花嫁 volume won’t add to my sins - but I must confess a crime, my fellows…

…Bookoff has gotten me again. Look away from the carnage if you must, for my wallet was victimized terribly-

The Crime Scene

A summary of my crimes: a complete 鋼の錬金術師 set, the :sparkles::sparkles::sparkles: LAST THREE VOLUMES I NEEDED TO COMPLETE MY DETCO COLLECTION :sparkles::sparkles::sparkles:, another two volumes of 青の祓魔師, the most recent Vanitas volume, half a dozen volumes of One Piece and a spin off volume focused on my boy Sanji.

Jokes aside, for all that my current to-read pile is obviously substantial, I do also simply enjoy owning the books and knowing they’re there for me to read whenever I get to them. I was the sort of child who was hard to tear away from bookstores as a child, if that wasn’t obvious already.

Best of luck in everyone’s reading as the week goes on!

I have so many books… There was a time where buying something from Bookoff every week was my favorite form of retail therapy, but now I have wayyyy too much, lol.

I like this thread, I’ll join in. For starters, I recently restarted reading Conbini Ningen (I got a good way through but then I moved apartments and fell off of everything for months and forgot stuff.) Glad to say I recognized more kanji and grammar this time so far! I’m on about p.9.

I have a serious case of “Volume 1 itis” where i just buy a ton of first volumes of series read 5 pages and decide “Yotsuwhatever is boring” throw it in the shelf and forget it. Meanwhile my wife bought me the entirety of Dungeon meshi, only issue is it’s quite a bit above my manga reading abilities but it takes up a bookshelf.

I will join because i did just pick up volume 2-3 of 無職転生 and 何とかおっさん何とか(Forgot the title except for that one part, but it’s a dude who was abused by an overpowered party and got stuck at F rank while they moved to A-rank, but they are still friends despite that. Actually, think the dude was actually abducted by the party from being a guild clerk. I’m finding it enjoyable except for the parts I don’t.)

I just need to find the TIME to read, I really do want to read them but life is so busy.

That last book sounds like some REALLY weird fetish material.

Is it this book?

Because yea, they kidnap a dude, abuse him, and then just kinda adventure together?

That one is different. the one I’m talking about is 親米おっさん冒険者最強パーティに死ぬほど鍛えられて無敵になる.

I assure you there’s very few fetishes outside of the obligatory “reason why Japanese phone cameras have clicking sounds” one.

I think I’ve seen that one on the shelf at my local Lawson. Wild.

Well, Something to add to my reading then. a cursory glance shows a style I like. for anyone else interested in reading it too. Ill add it to my list

I must admit I’m not doing so well in rehab. I just looked at some books on learnnatively to buy… I want some prose as well as manga to read but I don’t want to read the singular story collection I have right now :stuck_out_tongue: unfortunately, the books that look interesting to me were rated a few levels higher than the manga I’m currently reading, so I don’t know if its a fools errand to pursue that right now.
