Is the “Bunpo: Learn Japanese” iOS app from the same company that makes Bunpro? I created an account via web but can’t logon to the iOS app.

No it’s a completely separate / company.
Confusing, we know… 
The iPhone app is currently in Beta here, but unfortunately it has reached its max user count.
We’re hoping to get it published ASAP.
There are just a few more things I believe that need to be done so that it fulfills the app store’s guidelines.

Well, that explains why I can’t login then. Since I have your ear, is the lifetime payment similar to what I have found with other apps where it’s sunsetted and will have to pay for “new and improved” app n years later?

No sunsetting and rereleasing.
The core Bunpro product will always be in the Lifetime plan!
