Bunpro Job Opening: UI Designer

UI Designer Role

We are seeking a versatile and passionate designer with a strong focus on UI, visual identity, and branding. In this role, you will help shape the visual language of Bunpro. You will work on web and app UI, branding assets, marketing visuals, and design systems that create a cohesive, fun and engaging experience for our users.

During your first year at Bunpro, you will take a major role in refining our overall brand identity and establishing a unified visual direction for our platforms and community. If you love crafting beautiful user interfaces, building recognizable brands, and designing for clarity and purpose—we’d love to hear from you!

Requirements

  • Experience: 3-5+ years of experience working in design, in particular UI/UX, Graphic Design, or Branding.
  • Skills: Basic Copy Writing, Advanced Figma, Creative Suite of your choice. (We use Affinity)
  • Design Mindset: Strong design fundamentals: color, typography, grids, layout, spacing, hierarchy and visual consistency.
  • Creativity & Problem-Solving: Ability to think critically from a user and brand perspective.
  • Collaboration: Comfortable communicating design ideas and iterating based on feedback.
  • Brand Awareness: Experience building, refining, or expanding a brand identity / style guide (preferably in a start-up or growth focused environment.)

Nice-to-Haves (Not Required)

  • Familiarity with Bunpro (or experience learning Japanese) and a passion for language learning and education.
  • Experience designing components for web or mobile.
  • Knowledge of UX principles and accessibility.
  • Illustration / graphic design skills.
  • Marketing or social media campaign design experience.

How to Apply

If you’re interested in applying, please send an email to [email protected] containing the following:

  • Your resume and your most up-to-date portfolio showcasing UI, branding, or graphic design work.
  • One example case study (it does not need to be from a real project - we want to understand how you think and solve design problems).

Plus: answers to the following questions:

  • Why are you interested in Bunpro and this role in particular?
  • What are the top three professional strengths you would bring to this role?
  • What two professional/career highlights are you most proud of? Why?
  • Can you describe your design workflow from concept to final deliverables?

We aren’t planning on any massive changes to the UI or branding at this stage! There is however a lot of room for making the interface more cohesive and polishing off the rough edges.

We are ideally looking for a full time person to join the team. That being said, we are willing to be flexible for the right person.

I unfortunately lost most of my (freelance, often for-fun) design portfolio from college in a terrible laptop accident, but I think I’m going to gather what I can and do a quick test project and apply for this. How long do you expect to keep your hiring window open?

Keep at it! We may very well still be hiring for design in 3-5 years from now

@matthewjozwik At least 2-3 weeks I think. We generally start arranging interviews after the first week and try to talk to every person that applies who we think may be a good fit.

Thank you! One of the reasons I found this place is I was looking for somewhere else after the Wanikani UI I’ll go with “changed”…I agree, this is a very intuitive, user friendly, legible interface; I’d hate to see major changes.

Please don’t break my user scripts or I’ll be forced to apply as a backend dev and re implement them myself on an application level :sob:

Good luck with the hiring.

On a positive note I wish more companies would post the salary range transparently on the recruitment ad like you guys do!

I’m a computer scientist but you don’t want me as a UI designer… Could end up like this

But let me know if you need some data science!
