I don’t know what you already know so decided not to do research on these words, but I just noticed some stuff and decided to write.
So basically when I think about a word/kanji I try to find everything that could be connected to it.
In this case it is 状況 which I know well enough. So when I think about 状況, 状態, 情報（状態報告） comes to my mind, going thou other words with it I notice that I konw 白状 so it’s now assigned to this kanji as well giving me additional connection. This time I didn’t look up etymology dictionary for some reason, but the thing why I decided to write this message, I was trying some new learning approaches with easy content and came accros 将来 which I know, but not like I know difference between it and 未来 and not that I can read it. Anyhow, it’s read しょうらい and I see that the left part 将 of it is same as the left part of 状, and now I’m almost sure I’ve found a new sound component, because しょう (将) and じょう (状 ), just the same thing.
So now I open my etymology dict and it really says that this is a sound component.

But for this component there was no system data for some reason.
Oh ye, now looking at 況 I can see that it has a very clear meaning across words “state, condition” and it’s comming from water on the left while the right component is a sounds component (couldn’t find kanji with the same component easily). No other known word’s with it thou.
By the way even thou it seems like a long process it took me really just a few lookups (one anki and one in my dictionary) and tuning my brain onto finding those connection.
Of course the nuance of word is another thing which is still to be gained, but paying attention to details and trying to find all the connections between the new stuff and the stuff I know feels just like I have a superpower.
Anyhow, I just noticed that I’m writing this one is a Bunpro memes thread

The solution is to actually popularise saying things like “dattadeshita” and “se ga takai ga takai” in Japan. Then Bunpro will have to acknowledge this as correct Japanese.

It would surely make things easier
But I think there’s actually an underlying issue in how I approach SRS here even if I pretend it’s funny.
I did my vocab reviews right before that. After seeing a handful of flashcards I can’t help but go fast-forward mode. I read “I was on the verge” and automatically go ところだった
Can I avoid this? Probably if I had more discipline. Or less reviews. I don’t know.

If we start spamming Neuro-sama’s chat with だったでした, it’s only a matter of time before she starts repeating it back, it becomes a meme, spreads across the internet, gets into learning sets of all commercial AI and becomes de-facto correct Japanese.

I think everyone does this some of the time. Depending on our goals, we’ve got anywhere between 5,000 and 40,000 words to learn. Sometimes you just gotta power through them to keep things doable, thereby possibly sacrificing a little bit of discipline or retention. I consider it a normal, or even necessary, thing to do.

It is commonly known in language sphere that once people make a certain mistake enough times, it basically becomes the new norm. So I think the way to go about this is that every time someone says だったでした on Bunpro, it gets automatically reposted somewhere on Reddit or similar discussion boards, to make this “mistake” as visible to the world as possible.
