Bunpro Vocab Deck vs Anki Core 2k

TL;DR: Do you think the Bunpro vocab deck can replace the Anki Core 2k deck if I plan to focus on reading immersion after learning 2k–3k vocab?

Hi everyone!
I hope you’re doing well. I’m feeling a bit frustrated and could really use some advice. I’m planning to learn more vocabulary alongside studying kanji with WaniKani. Right now, I’ve decided not to focus on grammar because I feel like I mostly forget it without a solid understanding of vocabulary—it feels like I’m just brute-forcing it into my brain.

So, I’ve been thinking about setting up Anki with the Core 2k deck and putting Bunpro on hold for now. But I really love the progress indicator on Bunpro—it’s so motivating to see my progress visually!

Do you think replacing the Core 2k deck with the Bunpro vocab deck is a good idea? Or would sticking with Anki be better?

I’d really appreciate your thoughts, especially if you’ve tried both options. Thanks so much for your help!

personally, i would stick with bunpro if you want to take advantage of its example sentences. even the english translation of the sentences will give you a good idea of its usage in context. but really, just try both for a bit and see which one you prefer. the best one for you is the one you will actually use. if its motivating to see your progress and it makes you continue, then thats already a big plus

Yeah, I think I will try both for a while and see which one works better for me. You are right that the best tool is the one I will stick with! thanks for helping me feel more confident about my decision and I really appreciate the warm welcome to the community! :tada:

What I’ve done is find a list of the 2K core words and I’ve imported them into a custom deck in Bunpro!

That way all my reviews are in one place and I get to work through the core deck. You also get example sentences for most of the vocab.

There’s a small issue that there’s some mismatches between the words in the 2k list and what bunpro expects. you’ll see this as import errors but there were only a handful of them.

Can someone make this a public deck?

oh god, I didn’t opt in for the beta features before! I just did that now and found out there’s a custom deck option. :sob: this is definitely the answer, I will try experimenting with this feature first. Thank you so much for the information!

I will experiment with the features first and might consider sharing it publicly later on

I started with all the vocab in Genki 1 and 2 in Anki. I thought it was a good batch of vocab to start with

My advice is: If you like close reviews, stick with bunpro. If you are using recongition reviews- save the money and switch to Anki.
