Bunpro Vocab Decks (Announcement) - Mar/29/2024

In the new Super Cub deck half of the vocab was already marked as mastered for me (probably due to the WaniKani sync). From the other half, I already know about another 60%.

I just wanted to also say that it would be great, if we could mark the vocab as mastered from the deck vocab list with just a click. Doing this during the learning sessions is quite cumbersome and time consuming and messes up the learning batch sizes.

This is in the pipeline to add in the very very near future. Now that decks and vocab are becoming more and more of a priority that fits well within the Bunpro system, we want to allow people ‘moving’ their vocab study here from anywhere else to have the smoothest experience possible. This is one of the big features at the moment that needs to be implemented to get closer to that kind of ecosystem.

By the way, one of those, まみれ, has a corresponding N1 grammar point 塗れ (JLPT N1) | Bunpro

Is it the plan to link to (some) grammar points from the book decks too, or only to vocab?

Can you make a vocab deck for japanese words/grammar used in the app?

EX: when I click settings gear I see “復習設定” I know 復習 from genki, but not 設定 for people who want to use the app in Japanese.
and " 強調" in the nuance hint "誰かの注意がAに向けられたということを強調する表現 which isn’t in Bunpro as a vocab word yet. Also, why is it する表現 ?
I think this is really helpful for people like me in going JJ

We can do this pretty easily I think, as we have it all on record in the database. Give me a day or two and I’ll see if we can throw something together!:bowing_man:

Other users have also requested this in the past.

Aha — should I remove anything titled E from reviews, in that case?

Maybe hold off from removing them for the time being. Hopefully there is some way that we can transfer people’s SRS progress onto the correct words in the correct lists, to avoid any need for anyone to have to search for words that they have already studied in the past.

I just noticed that the “I Know This” option has already been added to the vocab deck item list.

Thank you!

Hi!

I’ve checked and most of my suggestions seem not to have been included in the スーパーカブ deck.

I find the decks lacking in added value, as compound names and set expressions are not included. I actually read along Jisho and go on discovering words and expressions (小テスト, 座り心地, 勝手知ったる and 席に着くare the last ones I’ve seen in chapter 11 of スーパーカブ), that I miss in the decks.

I hope that there is a way to tweek the parser to be able to include these type of words and expressions -all of which have a Jisho entry- so that they can be detected and added to the decks.

Have a nice day!

All of your suggestions have been added to our database of words, we are just tweaking the input method at the moment, as it is currently a 2 person process when it really shouldn’t be.

Basically every time the content team adds words, another person needs to change the old one and make sure the ordering is preserved. This is basically a content/development issue, and we are working on a fix so that there will be no waiting required on either end.

The biggest issue right now is that although we have lots of words in our database, there are still a heck of a lot missing. To mitigate this, we have obtained a big online corpus of ~100,000 words in frequency. Once we add all of these to our database, it will automatically fix most of the issues with the decks and the parser, as collocations/phrases etc will be caught in most cases, and not require adding after the fact.

There’s no exact timeline for this, but I’ll get it done as fast as possible! :bowing_man:

I will never be done with BunPro, lol. Glad I bought the Lifetime membership, cause that’s how long it’ll take to learn that many words :joy:.

I just came across 探す (JLPT N5) | Bunpro in the よつばと deck and remembered that I had already studied 捜す | Bunpro, which is an “E” item. the N5 Vocab item looks way more Bunpro-fied, even though it uses a different Kanji. What are your thoughts on how I should proceed? Get rid of the E item, or just keep them both?

I would recommend removing that item, as the E lists were incorrectly added to the system. We’re actually in the middle of building a deck at the moment which is a collection of all ‘same reading different kanji’ words. This deck will have links between all the relevant words and really focus on the differences between them, so I recommend waiting for that.

It will likely be out within the next 3ish weeks.

I don’t know if this is relevant to this, but just FYI that whenever I’ve come across what I call ‘duplicate’ vocab entries (usually one in the E deck, one in another), I’ve manually added cross-links between them, near the top of my Notes. The format I’ve used is:

Self: < self-link URL >
Duplicate: < URL to the other version >

So, if that helps with finding instances of these vocabs, then you could search for any of my notes that contain this format, to find such duplicates.

But again, not sure if this is the same kind of ‘duplicate’ as what you’re talking about. Just thought I’d mention it just in case.

Thanks! Regarding this:

Does this mean I should remove all the E list items now?

Come to think of it, I can remove them from reviews, but will Bunpro attempt to teach me them again as long as they’re still in the よつばと deck?

We’re still trying to work out the details for the conversion. You can remove them, but I cannot give you an honest answer as to whether they will be readded in a timely manner. I will try to push for some more traction on fixing this issue among the team, as it will potentially lead to additional problems in the future.

We have the full E list, and know where all the replacements are. The problem mainly lies with how we are going to handle all the review data for people that have already started studying these things. I am not 100% savvy on the details, but from memory, one of the big reasons why we can’t just fix this straight away is due to not being able to simply ‘move’ everyone’s review data from one word to another word.

Yeah, that sounds like a headache. Good luck! :crossed_fingers:

Sounds good!

Just to say, from a user’s perspective, please feel free to take an extra week or two to check the deck through before releasing (i.e. wait 4/5ish weeks).
It isn’t a long time to wait in the timeframe of learning another language.

I believe it’s better from a user’s point of view to start working on something that is more polished than to start tentatively and wait for / expect lots of “oops, sorry, we’ll fix that” … “and that” … “and that” …
I’m not saying it’s possible to get everything right first time, but it’s good to try to as far as possible - good luck!

Totally understandable that it would not be trivial to transfer history from one item to another.

Not sure if this is even on the table, but personally I wouldn’t mind them just disappearing and having to start fresh with replacements. It’s not like they have a lot of review history so far — the only ones I’ve encountered have been in the よつまとdeck, and from my point of view, the pain of dealing with them is greater than the pain of doing extra reviews for items I “know” already. For one thing, I actually get reading practice with the good items, and for another, when I get a new review sentence for an E item I’m often completely hosed, because without the nuance or other guidance, there are often multiple legitimate alternatives.

So that’s a solution I’d be happy with, but I get that some people might feel differently (maybe some people have a ton of reviews invested in them).
