Hey I just started Bunpro and for the most part I love it, but I’m at a point where I don’t really need the English translations. So, I saw the option to turn them off and that’s great but often you don’t get a thorough enough description of the point that’s being tested. I would love it if we could have descriptions of each grammar point in both English and Japanese, kind of like how the Shinkanzen series does it. This would be helpful in lessons as well as reviews, as I feel learners should be encouraged to understand Japanese as it is without the need to rely on English. With the addition of Japanese descriptions, you could also add an option to only show those instead of English. I’m new, so I don’t know if this has been discussed before but I feel it would be a great addition.
To give a clearer example of the kinds of questions I see with a lack of information, I took an example from my reviews.
The only direction given here is [casual]. I have to resort to the hint here.
This is enough information after showing the hint. I think it would be better if it indicated that the answer is the negative inflection of する, that would be enough to tell me I need to put in していない or してない. However as I wrote in my original post, I think the option for descriptions in Japanese would add a lot of value to the reviews.
I think that’s a great suggestion! Hope they’ll implement it. I’m probably not good enough to understand hints in Japanese yet but it does feel wrong relying on English to produce Japanese sentences.
I agree with you 100%
The sooner we stop relying on translations, the faster we progress
I agree. More than once, I have answered wrong because the hint wasn’t specific enough. Maybe they wanted past tense, or negative but didn’t specify without the full sentence shown in English.
and i’m turkish. trying to learn japanese via my not that good english; that’s hell of a challange.
heck, if i’m suffering, let everyone suffer! make it all japanese bunpro! or chinese. dothraki, i don’t care. anything but english, pretty please
This was brought up pretty early on and had a lot of support back then too. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s still on their to-do list for down the road. (This is also something I would love to see.)
Yeah, at least for n3 plus it would be great to have. I think when I get past reviewing N5/N4 stuff I will be adding Japanese descriptions in the memos, but it would be great to have hints in Japanese. I don’t think the English is too bad in the early levels since it’s pretty fundamental and gets the point across well enough, but it would still be a nice option for sure.
