Changes to Vocab hints?

Hi forums!

I’ve been using Bunpro for about 8-9 months now and I’ve been doing the grammar and vocab decks for N4-N1 and over the past few months I noticed that as opposed to the hints being simple translations like 本 - book, they have changed to being full explanations like Something which has pages and contains information which I could see being more helpful to people who like the full nuance.

Personally however, I’m not a fan, so I wanted to ask if there is a way to change it back? I just noticed more vocab hints were changed today and it really throws off my rhythm unfortunately.

Any advice or hints in case I’ve missed something really simple would be amazing!

It threw me off as well at the beginning because I couldn’t rely on the same hints anymore to translate, but the new hints I think are a better representation for what those words mean and therefore end up in you getting a better understanding of the terms.

Just give it some time for the new descriptions to stick. They’re worth it IMO.

I do appreciate the spirit of the changes - they are much easier to parse versus a long chain of definitions.

In many cases, however, I’ve noticed it makes the synonym hell situation worse, not better? Something like ‘分 [ぶ]’ now has ‘a word indicating a small part when something is divided’, which seems to be a lot less precise than the original definition of ‘one-tenth, one percent…’. Some words, like 適当 & 適切, are close synonyms, except for additional meanings in one or the other (like 適当’s possible sarcastic use, I think). The newer definitions aren’t always capturing these nuances, nor are they necessarily evident within the context of the example sentences.

Ultimately, these kinks will hopefully work themselves out with the feedback system, but since it is dependent on user initiative, it might take a frustratingly long time - I already submitted some today, and just gave up on the rest because of a lack of time. In the meantime, it would be great if the original definitions be appended to the end of the new ones. It’s the best of 2 words - readability + nuance?

My review accuracy is going down the toilet, since this update. I used to get 92% to 98%, but now it’s down to 70%…

I also feel it’s hard to memorize vocab in this way, because, during the memorization stage, you get the list of synonyms that was shown previously on reviews, but when it comes to the first review, it doesn’t actually show you what you memorized, it shows you a cue you had no previous exposure to.
Also, each japanese word usually has a lot english meanings, but the cues provided in the reviews with the new system are very limited, in the sense that they don’t cover all of the english meanings of the japanese word, usually focusing on 1, or if you’re lucky, 2 meanings.
Is there really no hope of, at least, having the option to choose which type of cues you get?

I don’t know what else you’re doing to study, but tbh I’m quite happy if I manage somewhere in the 70’s :grinning: This is obviously very depending on total flashcard volume etc
