Confused on Vocab Reading Mode

this might be a dumb question…but I am a bit confused on how reading mode for vocab actually works, and how best to use it.
I just started a couple days ago, I am mostly interested in comprehension, at least at the start, so reading mode feels like the most useful for me. I definitely will use fill-in mode for grammar though.

Do I just listen to the sentence, and say ‘yes’ if I understood it and ‘no’ if I didn’t?
What if I recognized the highlighted vocab (visually, or by sound) but didn’t understand the rest of the sentence? Or only parts of it?

You read it and determine if you understood it or not. How you determine that is up to you, really.

I would personally recommend only pressing “good” if you understood the whole sentence, or at least the gist of the sentence, along with the word. I feel that understanding the whole sentence helps reinforce the word itself.

What @MarcoSolo said.

Big emphasis on “the word” and not “the sentence” tho.
Like if you didn’t understand 3 words in the sentence, but understood the 1 target word, and the meaning/context in which it was used, I’d probs just Good it.

Cuz remember, if you Hard it, next time a completely difference sentence will show up for that target word.

Sentence reading and self grade is the best way to learn in my opinion, cause it’s free reading time practice.

I only fail, if I didn’t get the word right, no matter if I got the rest of the sentence or not. If a vocab has multiple meanings, the rest of the sentence can be way more important, can I get the right meaning in context? If I know all the words in the sentence and the grammar, I expect to get also the correct meaning of the vocab or I will fail it. But when I don’t know enough words to get the context, but got the main meaning of the vocab right, I’ll grade the sentence as correct and set up a ghost for the sentence with the uncommon meaning.

What I do: look at the highlited word. If I get the meaning and reading correct pass. Dont fail

I read on a blog to:
First: Try to read the sentence
Second: guess the reading if it’s kanji
Third: hover over the word, and guess the meaning
Fourth: Check the answer If you were correct in step three pass, if not fail
