I typed in けど but the hint said it was expecting “a less formal” version of it. What it was expecting in fact was けれども which is the exact opposite of “less formal”.
I understand that as it wants less formal than が while still being literary ＝けれども > けど

But I did not type in が, the hints in yellow are always responses to your actual input

Just wanted to jump in both apologize for and clarify this issue.
It appears there were a few copy-paste errors that were resulting in inaccurate/misleading hints being displayed for some of the alternate answers.
We’ve already received and addressed multiple instances that have been reported, and will try to go through and make sure everything is in order. If any of these confusing hints keep showing up after today, please just send us some feedback and we’ll address it ASAP.
Again, we just wanted to make it clear that this is (was) a simple typo/text-bug and not some deeper comment on the relative politeness of けど・けれども, etc.
