されても Construction Question

Hey guys, I have another question that came up after my recent reviews and I’m scratching my had at this construction.

何を されて も、あいつらに君の名前を教えない。

No matter what they do to me , I won’t give up your name.

I know that “ても” constructions means “even if”, but how do I end up at “no matter what you do to me”?

What is the role of each element, what does the passive do here and what does the も do here. Is the passive て-form combined with も something special that I just haven’t encountered?

These are my thoughts, I’m trying my best to understand from what I know myself but I don’t seem to understand this weird construction. (But I love that Bunpro throws these curve balls once in a while to really make me question how things work.)

The answer is very simple, the combination of WH-word (interrogatuve word) and ても is “no matter WH-word”.

何 … Verb[ても] no matter what
どこで … Verb[ても] no matter where
誰 … Verb[ても] no matter who
どう … Verb[ても] no matter how
いつ … Verb[ても] no matter when

Since you already understood the rest of the sentence, it should be clear now :+1:

Just in case explanation:

Pieces:
される is done(to me) - passive
何を … ても no matter what
あいつら them
君の名前 your name(if we add は we will get title of famous anime movie :wink:)
教える - to inform/ tell(teach) - 教えない won’t tell

何を され ても、あいつらに君の名前 を教えない。

No matter what is done to me, I won’t tell them your name.
