Cram Badge

Well,…

I readed the badge achievement explanation how to achieve it and could confirm, that its just about to start a cram session with atleast doing one item 1000 times . I was able to get the first achievement in 2 minutes, where i confirmed it.I kinda felt the requirement really discouraging to learners to do proper cram session since in term of progress due to badge definition, it punishes you after u finished your first item if u decide to keep going…

And guys, this isnt a complaint about that u havent a choice, but more a critique that this badge series makes more harm then good because it does the opposite to what it should do, encourage and reward a healthy steady learn progress, but it just supports exploits and wasted time at best.It doesnt even say anything remarkable, since u could just do the entire series in just one day anyway.

I think it would be healthier and for the interest of the community , to change the condition, or straight up remove the cram badges.

What do u guys think about it? About the cram badges specific, or the badges overall. Any other badges idea or improvements?

Hey @Gabrielkarrer !

Bunpro’s ultimate goal is to give you guys the tools to learn and a path to follow to meet your language goals, be it casual or master.

As a subset of this, the badge’s main objectives are two: to give users a little push and motivation to keep going/studying, and to hint users about the other functionalities the site has.

The same could be said about Streak Badges, if you just Login and do 1 review every single day you’ll still get them.

Even if we think of mechanisms to circumvent this specific issue, I’m sure people will find a new way to cheese the achievements, and honestly that’s fine. Badges were designed not as a thing to get, but as a goal to aim at, feel good about and to help you keep studying. Some people want to collect them all, some people just ignore them.

How would you change it for the better? I think Badges meet their current goal (a small dose of motivation) as they are right now, but we’re always open to improvement!

This is just my own opinion, and it’s probably unpopular, but I don’t like how the cram function tracks accuracy stats. I like my free study to be as low stress as possible and even just knowing that some number that you can only see by deliberately looking for it is being affected pushes me towards cheating on the study sessions to prevent wrong answers.

I get that a lot of people probably like those stats though, would it be possible to implement them more as “session stats” that you can choose to reset?

I don’t use those functions so I don’t even get to see those badges

First of all, thank you for your kind reply.

I find the badges in general a good idea as i mentioned and i would love to see more added. This post is rather just aimed at the way how u achieve it.

I personally would change the requirement to = finish 5000 cram items= or something along those lines. So that u get "rewarded"for every item, then rather every session.

Currently there is in my perspective 2 scenarios where this complicated requirement doesnt make a problem at all. Scenario A: You have regularly cram sessions planed in your schedule, so you get it anyways over time naturally. or B: U don´t care about achieving badges.

This will left the people who care about badges but don´t have such a regular schedule and will force them eventually in a demoralicing habit.

Thats why id like to change it, i would probably cram something, but it just feels not rewarding.

I thought the same, but there a 2 difference in those: First the login badge progress is capped per day, the cram badge on the other hand has no limitation and u can obtain it within a day. Second u get the streak count passively, by just doing bunpro and with the danger that ur streak can get redone if u miss a single day, it pressures you to actually not drop it(which i think is a healthy learning attitude) the cram badge u have to go out your way to explicit use this tool. Sure u could cheese the streak badge and abuse it if u have a busy day, but i think the meaning in this badge lies more in the commitment anyways.

With scrips you can almost cheese everything, but i think its more about how obligated u feel to do it in the first place. With a simple straighforward task like a mentioned, i think it would me much more encouraging to try the tool. (In my Situation when collected most of the others badge, would probably look for a reopen script to acheive them)

Sorry for the long post, i am not good with words. And i apology in advance for my rough speech.

Summer vacation… I wish. That’s when I have more workload.

In any case BunPro shouldn’t be your exclusive Japanese studying source, as it shouldn’t be Wanikani either. I think that’s a common misconception.

That’s also the reason why I haven’t bothered with those functions (at least yet), I fill it with plenty of other stuff.

I refuse to get a cram badge because I don’t cram either.
Unless you want to give me a badge for cramming candies down my mouth because I am very good at that and everyone should compliment me for it
