Cram help

I’m having trouble using the cram function. I’m currently working my way through N4 grammar, which I would like to cram. So, I went into Practice → Cram. Here, in the “Content to cram” section, I selected N4 Grammar, and clicked Add. However, it adds all N4 grammar, not just the items I’ve learnt. I can expand the N4 Grammar section and add each grammar point I’ve learnt one by one, but I’ve learnt over half of them, so this would be a very tedious process.

Is there a way to only add grammar items (and/or vocab) that I’ve learnt, and automatically exclude items I don’t know? I found that there’s a “Special” section, where I can add recently learnt items, or add items based on SRS, but this includes all items, so N4 and N5 grammar and vocab.

I would have assumed this would happen by default, since… obviously… there’s no possible way to cram something you don’t yet know?!?

I dont think this feature exists, but I would also like it.

While I agree that would be a nice feature to have, I do believe there’s a another way that might be useful to you. A middle ground between adding all N4 grammar and adding the grammar points one by one.

When expanding the N4 grammar section, it groups the grammar by lesson, right? If you’re looking to cram half of the N4 grammar, wouldn’t it be okay to click, say, the first six lessons?

(Currently not at my pc. Please excuse the mobile screenshot.)

Aah that’s a good method, thanks for sharing.

Are you talking about spoiler mode or are you asking for something else? Spoiler mode doesn’t cram anything you haven’t learned yet.

This seems like a plausible solution, but I just tried it by turning it on and clicking to add all N5 grammar. I can see that it did in fact add all grammar points including ones I haven’t seen or studied yet. So I guess I don’t really understand the point of this setting?

I would also like to have this capability. Seems like an obvious feature that’s missing.

One way this could work is if you could click on Beginner or Adept in the Progress area of the Dashboard and there would be a button to cram (review) all the items you have at that level. Or steal the “Extra Study” button for recently missed items from Wanikani. I haven’t used the cram feature so far because I find it pain to set up what I want to review. Then it doesn’t save the settings and I have go through all the choices again when I come back. I would be more likely to use it if there was less friction - more of a “one button” and go approach.

I think this isnt quite ideal bc it applies to sentences only and I might want to cram a grammar point with different sentences I havent seen yet but not cram grammar I haven’t learned yet. It is helpful, tho

I’ll PM you and follow-up about this. I just tested it myself (1 sentence studied total in an entire JLPT section) and after starting the session with all points in the queue, it still only gave me that one exact sentence and nothing else. Strange

I’ll chat with the devs later and see if there’s a relatively easy/quick fix we can do for this. Cram is pretty low on the totem pole at the moment so nothing guaranteed, but I’ll see what’s possible :mage:

Going a little further (as I should have in the first place), I see you are correct and the unseen items are not actually added to the cram session when you start the study session. The confusion comes from seeing the items marked as “added” and showing up in the initial cram count on the right even when they won’t actually be added to the session. Unexpected behavior.

Also I think there’s a problem with terminology consistency. It seems like the terms “sentence”, “grammar point”, “item”, and “lesson” are getting mixed up and it’s not always clear what is being referred to. When you say you added “1 sentence” do you mean 1 grammar point? Or 1 item? because I don’t see an option to choose a specific “sentence” to add.

I don’t mean to be pedantic here, I’m just easily confused by ambiguity.

TLDR of the below message; I’m in favor of more advanced filtering around content that has been Learned for use in Cram sessions.

Thank you for posting this! I am also interested in this feature. While I am relatively new to consistent use of BunPro (started last year, but have used daily since the start of 2026), I have not managed to use the Cram feature for this exact reason. I think it should be made INCREDIBLY straightforward to queue up a Cram session with any number of sentences for all items that you have Learned within a given deck (i.e., without having to select individual items or Lessons, and not only sentences that have been reviewed, such as with the “No Spoilers” button, but any use of Grammar/ Vocab I have learned)-- exactly the kind of review I want when the SRS sessions just aren’t sticking in my brain.

I’m really not sure how to get what I want out of Cram. Since reading this thread and experimenting more with the Settings for Cram, I think that I can get all possible sentences I have seen in reviews for Grammar I have Learned (82 of the N5 items) by selecting both “Complete Mode” and “No Spoilers” (results in 874 Cram items, instead of either 1554 or 82 for each of these modes selected independently, respectively). However, if I want to review fewer items than “Complete Mode”, but more than just the “previously seen or reviewed Sentences” for each item, this is not possible by selecting “No Spoilers” and an amount of Questions per Item greater than those I have previously seen for any Item. (e.g., selecting “どれ” (imagine I’ve selected a whole deck) and “No Spoilers” with 12 Questions per Item only shows me 2 review items, but I would like be able to select a swathe of items (such as the N5 Grammar deck items I have learned, and be able to get 3-5 Cram items for each Grammar point-- irrelevant of how many sentences I have seen for each of these Learned items).

I explored the Special tab of Cram and think that if I were able to apply a second filter by Decks onto the SRS levels that I add to a Cram, that could accomplish my aim (since any items I have learned will be in SRS, but I could restrict down items to a certain JLPT level or select only Vocab/ Grammar for Cramming).

Maybe this just looks like a “Learned” tab in Cram, where you select a Deck you have learned some portion of and how many Questions per Item you would like to review-- this tab could automatically apply a filter to only show Items you have Learned within the selected Decks, but allow selection of any number of Questions per Item. For those who would want to filter out some Lessons or Items from Decks, they could instead make use of the “Learning” tab to do so.

Sorry this is a bit rambly, but I wanted to provide examples of what I have attempted, and what I would like to be able to do.

I’ve just noticed that there is now a “Filtering Settings” section in the cram setup page which allows you to filter out unknown grammar/vocab.

Seriously, the Bunpro team don’t mess about!

New option will be on by default for all users going forward, thanks everyone for the feedback on it! Hopefully it eases some of the confusion around this specific use-case we’ve been discussing. Doubt Cram will get touched again for a bit but always welcome to post more feedback either on the forums or by PM’ing me and we can have a back-and-forth about it :v:

This new option allows for exactly what I want out of Cram! Thank you very much for this addition!
