Daily Stroke Order Practice

漢字:白
Kun: しろ、しら-、しろ.い
On: ハク、ビャク
Jisho Page and WaniKani Page

メモ:The next color is technically every color! When light hits an object, you see the color of light that is reflected back into your eyes. When you’re looking at something that is white, you’re seeing every color reflected back into your eyes, which your brain interprets as white!

漢字:黒
Kun: くろ、くろ.ずむ、くろ.い
On: コク

Jisho Page and WaniKani Page

メモ:Like white, there are arguments to call Black “every color” as well, as it absorbs every color of light. When no light reflects back into your eyes from a given surface, your eyes perceive it as the color black.

漢字:茶

On: チャ、サ
Jisho Page and WaniKani Page

メモ:While not technically a color in its own right, 茶 is a part of the word 茶色、meaning Brown, or “Tea Colored”. お茶も美味しいよ!

I need to take something off my chest…

Everytime I read the name of this thread, I read “Daily Stroke Practice”, and I imagine someone practicing (having) strokes (?) for a few moments :skull:

Congrats on keeping the good work :+1:

漢字:育
Kun: そだ.つ、そだ.ち、そだ.てる、はぐく.む
On: イク

メモ:In an effort to reset my release schedule of these, today will be a double feature. Both of these Kanji were taken from a word I recently played on The Shiritori Thread since I needed two of them and since I was playing it in a word game, I should know how to write it properly.

Today is Saturday, which usually means my Bi-Weekly Review, but I’m going to be postponing it due to my schedule being a bit busy right now. I’ll still be making sure to go back and rewrite the kanji I’ve been learning!

Bonk

Seems like someone needs some Daily Order Practice…

Nice Stroke Order practice, as always!

序に, you could continue with the second part of the song…

漢字:死
Kun: し.ぬ、し.に-
On: シ
Jisho Page and WaniKani Page

メモ:I promise I’m not cursing anyone, writing 死 down so many times…
Researching this Kanji actually led me to find a Wikipedia page on Ritsuryō, or 律令、 a historical legal system used in Feudal Japan that was based on the Philosophy of Confucianism and Chinese Legalism. Informative read for anyone interested.
死 (shi) was the most severe of the 5 Ritsuryō punishments, being either death by hanging or decapitation.

漢字:刑
Kun: N/A
On: ケイ
Jisho Page and WaniKani Page

メモ:Nothing too groundbreaking to report today. I do find it interesting that both characters of 死刑 are 6 strokes each, and Kanji without a specified Kun’yomi reading always intrigue me, but with this, the Song is completed.

漢字:始
Kun: はじ.める、はじ.まる
On: シ
Jisho Page and WaniKani Page

メモ:Maybe I should’ve used this as my first practice character…
Any Kanji with the 女 radical in it automatically becomes a significant challenge for me, which is proof that I need more practice on spacing it out properly. Often times they will come out looking too squashed, or too wide. Getting it just right will end up being a project I’m sure.

Or this one: めまして!

The 女 radical sure is difficult to master. We had that conversation in マットさん’s thread (see this entry and the following):

頑張って!

Good idea!

漢字:初
Kun: はじ.め、はつ、うい-、-そ.める、-ぞ.め
On: ショ
Jisho Page and WaniKani Page

メモ:Interestingly, this Kanji shares a number of uses with yesterday’s Kanji. A variety of words can be written using either, like 初めて and 始めて、始まり and 初まり、as well as 初めに and 始めに。Just make sure you don’t use 始 in any 「はつ」readings, like 初恋 and 初耳。I’m also not quite sure the differences in nuance between the two when used for the same word, if anyone knows and would like to share I’d be happy to learn!

Hi!

I think the nuance has to do with ‘first time’ () and ‘begin, start’ (). You say ‘初めまして’ to someone you meet for the first time (初恋, first love; 初耳, first time you hear something) but you would say ‘始めましょう’ to start something (a class, a game,…). Thus the construction ‘[ます stem]+始める’ to say you start doing something, e.g. 遊び始める, start playing.

メモ:What comes after the start? And no, I’m not planning on ending with this Kanji either
I messed up a bit on the example kanji next to the full-sized box, but I made up for it with the rest I drew afterwards.

漢字:了
Kun: N/A
On: リョウ
Jisho Page and WaniKani Page

メモ:Another similar Kanji, with a general meaning of “Complete” or “Finish”, and doesn’t seem to have a Kun’yomi reading either. A very simple character, but it is still important to be able to space it out properly, especially when written in conjunction with other Kanji, in Jukugo constructions.

メモ:Double feature because I was late to post yesterday’s Kanji. I had it drawn out yesterday, just didn’t manage to post it until today.
Taken from another word I played in the Shiritori Thread, 練習 is definitely something I need to do more of.

I thought I’d give this an attempt, too.

Guess I’ll join in for this one as well!

These look great!

Great work!

It’s so cool to me that 3 different people with the same set of instructions will create 3 different pieces. Even though we all drew the same characters, there are slight differences across everyone’s characters. Thank you for getting some 練習 in with me!

漢字:唇
Kun: くちびる
On: シン
Jisho Page and WaniKani Page

メモ:Speaking of 練習、I was working on one of my Anki decks recently and realized I’m still not quite confident with a number of anatomy-related Kanji. So I figured I would go on a body part-related streak for this thread. Any recommendations would be wonderful, for uncommon Kanji or even 熟語 compounds for parts of the human body that don’t get much love (like 烏啄骨、or Coracoid, played by @SoreWaMaichiru in the Shiritori thread a little while back) are welcome!
