Do the English translations throw you off?

They drive me crazy! The explanation for this gramma point for example is as follows:

に伴って・に伴い

as・due

(along/hand-in-hand) with

resulted in

be consequent upon

But then when I get a sentence such as this one, the Japanese makes perfect sense but then the highlighted grammar point in English seems somewhat misleading? It is not wrong so to speak but written in a way that makes me think way too hard about an answer that should be blindingly obvious. I wish I could turn off the English all together lol

You can actually disable it in settings, or set it so you only see the yellow part but not the entire sentence.

You can disable the translation in settings (menu titled: “review English”):

Though the translation is like this to differentiate between when the noun is modified or not
(に伴って can be approximated to “along with”, “accordingly” or “as”, and に伴う is closer to "associated with) and to help choose between different grammar points (ため vs に伴う) and stay fairly close to actual Japanese meaning.

But some need some revamping for sure :bowing_man:

I feel it would be really great if they also added an option for just a Japanese description of the grammar point instead of a direct English translation.

Some grammar points (the ones that are easily confused) have something like this.
It is called nuance, and you can actually make it appear instead of translation.
Just choose “always show nuance” in the same menu. :cowboy_hat_face::+1:

That sounds like it could be better. Where exactly is that option? I am looking now but cannot see it.

Turn it off and just use the hint. My accuracy is usually way higher with just a hint.

Edit: hint or nuance - both are good

That’s what I did recently. And it’s so much better! :slight_smile:

Though, sometimes you have no choice but to press space bar to see the english hint, as otherwise you can’t guess what is being asked. But it’s still better this way for sure.

Thanks to the recommendations on here - I had it sent to hint before, and I’ve recently switched to just nuance. For me, nuance actually forces me to read the sentence properly and think about what’s being asked. Which can only be a good thing, right? I’ve had it without full English translations for a while.

That being said, my accuracy has plummeted a little as a result of going nuance only, but it’s improving again now :sweat_smile: I have a cheeky lil peek when I’m not given enough nuance, but not after using at least one of my two braincells.
