Feature Request: Connecting to jpdb

Exploring the settings I saw that I can connect Bunpro with Wanikani to hide furigana of words I should already know.

I’m more of a jpdb.io user, and it would be great if we could use it. Note that the app is also in beta, so the API could change without notice, but it would be a great addition.

You’ll have to ask https://jpdb.io/ to implement this. AFAIK, it’s up to them if they want to incorporate Wanikani and BunPro’s API token.

I wonder if bunpro could import anki into vocab like jpdb does? You upload your anki collection and it pulls vocab and review history so you can pick up where you left off in anki. (to transition, I’m passing words I get wrong in anki, and adding them to bunpro. After 2 weeks, I now have more reviews in bunpro than anki)

That could definitely help people wanting to transition over to bunpro for vocab from Anki

I would like that as well, but apparently Bunpro furigana system is kanji-based, and not vocabulary based. If you have kanji enabled on jpdb, AND you have readings in your kanji cards, this could be a decent addition, but not everyone have this settings enabled. If you wanted furigana based on vocabulary, it would mean rewriting the whole furigana system, I think.

The current furigana system is a little strange. Sometimes i disable furigana of a word like 先生 and all words that use 生 lose their furigana, even words with a different reading like 生きる. When there’s multiple kanji together, you can’t disable the furigana of only one of them. Once I found the noun 焼き肉屋, and I could select 肉屋 like it was a word, but It’s actually 焼き肉+屋.

I disable them very sparingly because of these issues, but it’s not rare at all to find a completely unknown word (with unknown readings) with furigana disabled, because I once disabled other words that used their kanji.

@Jake I’m correct in my understanding of the system? Could you tell us it there’s any plans about improving the furigana?

I’m just using the jpdb reader extension (GitHub - max-kamps/jpd-breader), and it automatically parses the bunpro review page. (I use it with furigana on hover, additional info / reviews via the shift key)

This way you can even do jpdb reviews while doing bunpro reviews :sunglasses:
It won’t work if you’re using the mobile app of bunpro though …

I’ve been trying to do jpdb reviews of the day before bunpro (grammar only) reviews, so as not to “spoil” them, but…

Doing both at the same time sounds like a neat idea.
