The Audio fix, if it appears with 00:00 for the timings, right click and copy audio address and paste it into a new tab, accept Google’s Captcha and the audio should start working for the examples

Ah you’re right. I guess I just started typing before my eyes picked up the hint. Maybe they should put the hint below the blank line so it doesn’t disappear right away. I usually find myself starting to type, then deleting what I typed to double check which form they are after.

If you are not sure, I think that point will have the “more” option to click on the left side if you want it to not disappear. It’s really handy for these multi-point scenarios and need extra context to answer.

Hello,

I feel like this sentence needs to be revised. I ran it by my girlfriend and she felt it wasn’t natural sounding. V-stem+ながら, how i understand it, is for intentional acts that occur at the same time as another event. Please correct me if I am mistaken.

Thank you!

Hey

You are right :bowing_man:
The limitation of AながらB is that the subject of A and B has to be the same. In addition to that, the action cannot be momentary. (because there won’t be enough time to do both of them at the same time, same case for 割れる, etc). And this is why this sentence sounded unnatural.

So I have changed the example to:
あの人はスマートフォンを使いながら歩いていて、女の人とぶつかった。

Thank you and sorry for the inconvenience.

Hey I was wondering what the road-map was for future grammar points.

Lately it’s been 5 grammar points added per month. At this rate, it’ll be the end of the year before N4-N2 is finished, let alone all the N1 grammar points that have yet to be added. I’m planning on taking N1 in December if I pass N2 with a good enough score, so I had previously assumed N1 would be well and done by then. But the gaps between updates have made me start to question it.

Hey

To be honest, at the moment we are adding grammar points for Tobira path. I think we will end around the middle of August (or end of August), and then we will move to N1 grammar points.

We will do our best to write the best N1 as possible

Hi!

I think in the grammar point に代わって/に代わり should be extended to include がわりに, which I recently stumbled upon while preparing for JLPT N3 in a exam practice book. As I understand, its the same grammar point with Noun+がわりに structure, just without に particle at the beginning. (It’s just the deformed reading of 代わり )

Cheers and thanks for all the awesome work!

It would be nice to have/feature requests:

  • Preserving focus on the answer input after clicking on word to reveal furigana. Some time ago I found that the Wanikani connection thing is not working so well resulting in kanji/words unknown to me not having furigana and those I know really well having it displayed. So I ended up turning all the furigana off (I prefer to stretch my mind). But there are still many kanji I don’t know so I have to click on words to get to know how to read them. This takes off the focus from the input so I have to click on the input widget before continuing to write my answer.
  • Warning user when trying to leave the review page. Connected with the request right above. If the answer input is not focused and I hit the backspace button the browser goes back to the preview page. Not a big deal, but I’d prefer to be warned.
  • Option to star/mark grammar points - sometimes when doing reviews I’d like to keep a grammar point for a letter read/refresh (not to interrupt the review session). I keep opening them in new tabs. A page listing all the “starred” grammar points would be nice to have.
  • Topics discussing each sentence - I think user may have questions about some sentences or maybe they have something to add, bonus info etc. A button creating/leading to a new discussion on the forums would be nice (something like the “Discuss” feature in Duolingo reviews).

Thanks!

My suggestion: an option for users to create their own “paths.”

There are paths for textbooks currently like Genki, but I would like one for the “An Integrated Approach to Intermediate Japanese” textbook since I will be using it in the upcoming semester. The user could theoretically select grammar after searching for it in the Bunpro grammar list and assign it to the new path they create.

With a path, I could easily see what grammar is being covered in Bunpro and what grammar I need to learn outside of Bunpro. I could also “cram” certain textbook sections then.

Thank you~~

Review size would be great to have. I don’t like doing 100 reviews in one sitting. So if I can set up my review size to be, say, 20 items it would be perfect. I would do these 20 reviews and take a break, then return later and do another 20, etc. Currently I just have to use “wrap up” feature to achieve the same result…

It would be nice to have a setting for max # of reviews per session, since I also tend to limit mine to ~20 per sitting.

Hello

I just stumbled upon the expression くらいなら (rather than…) in Shin Kanzen Master N3 and I didn’t see it in Bunpro, I was wondering if you are gonna add it in the future?

Link to what I’m referring: https://jlptsensei.com/learn-japanese-grammar/くらいなら-kurai-nara/

It’s a bit advanced for N3 as I understand, so I don’t get why it was in there…

Cheers

Hey and sorry for the late answer!

Yes, you are right がわりに is used, but there is a small problem with it.
It sounds natural with some nouns, but with others, it is not used and there is no real rule about that.

Some examples when it sounds OK:
挨拶代わりに寄りました。
お菓子を多めに食べてご飯代わりにする。

And some which are not used.
英語代わりにスペイン語を習った。

We will add a note about this in the grammar point!

@mrnoone

Just wondering why putting your account in Vacation Mode doesn’t actually postpone reviews? It just hides how many review you have piling up.

I put my account in Vacation Mode thinking I wouldn’t have 500+ reviews instantly after turning it off.

If you don’t have that function, you might want to explain why or something please.

(Apologize if this comes off like I’m angry, just stressed now, lol)

Hi!

I joined a while ago and just started using this site (got a monthly subscription).

So far I can’t say too much about the content, but one thing thats immediately obvious is how slow the site can be at times. Not really responsive and sometimes takes me up to a minute to proceed to the next page. I think this is the biggest thing I’d suggest improving at this point.

Thanks and I look forward to going through more lessons!

Hey! Sorry!! :bowing_man:

I am not sure what might have caused it but I will look into it. In the meantime, I can fix that issue for you manually. Could you tell me about when you went into vacation mode? Then I will offset your reviews by that amount of time by hand.

Thank you for the help!

I’m back in vacation mode now; I had started vacation mode on July 6th around 8 PM JST

I noticed something today and was wondering if its a bug or intended, and thats the creation of Ghost Reviews on sentences that you’ve “retried”.

Specifically, I find myself using the backspace option in the SRS tool to retry cards when I make a typo (usually because I forget you have to type double n for ん and fail to notice before entering), however when this happens the system still seems to create a ghost review for the initial failure of the card. I would expect hitting backspace to “retry” or “undo” the card would undo the creation of a ghost review.

Is there any way to prevent this other then setting ghost reviews to minimal?
