So, I haven’t been tracking this thread (nor the bug reports thread, neither) for a long time, so I don’t know if my suggestions will have already been made previously. Oh well.
Reviews page Text Input to handle Japanese IME input better (especially for special features and shortcuts)
This is a general request to handle Japanese IME properly under all circumstances.
However, so far I have only noticed this for when I’m using Japanese IME (on Windows) and I want to see the hints for some item. I press the Space bar, but nothing happens! It is surely because the IME is rendering a Japanese (Ideographic) space character ’ ’ (Unicode U+3000), instead of a typical ASCII space character ’ ’ (U+0020).
I don’t actually know if there are any other issues with IME, but if even this oft-used feature isn’t working correctly, then I imagine that there probably are. (Like, does it show the keyboard shortcut help when you type ‘/’ in IME mode, for example? Probably not? So, is there a way to make such keyboard shortcuts available in IME mode?)
Allow Vocab searching to include auto-romaji-to-kana search results
Currently if you search Grammar using romaji input, you get results which match kana. E.g. ‘kore’ will find the grammar point for ‘これ’.
But this does not work for searching Vocabs. E.g. Searching for ‘kono’ does not find the vocab for ‘この’. Would be very nice if it did.
(Nicely, vocab search does allow searching definitions, too, so searching for ‘this’ will find the vocab for ‘この’, among others. )
Display JLPT level for each item in results list of Vocab search
Currently, I am only interested in adding Vocabs which have Cloze support (currently only from N5 to N3). But since the Vocab Search results do not display the JLPT level on each item, I have to open all potentially-likely items in the list (I do so in separate tabs), which works, but it’s a lot of extra load on the server (and my browser) for no good reason. If the JLPT levels were listed on each item, I would only bother opening those from N5 to N3. Much less load and time.
Also, would just generally be useful for anyone searching for Vocabs to add, but who only want to add items from their current focus level (e.g. beginners only wanting to start with N5 items).
This should not be so difficult/different from what’s currently available in the display of search results, which includes the user’s progress indicator already, which I imagine is probably a more costly DB query/join to make than for each item’s own ‘level’ indicator.
Note: If an item does not fit into a JLPT level – for example, many searchable and addable vocabs have their Vocab Info listed as “A7 Expression” or something like that – then can either leave the ‘level’ in the search listings as blank, or could perhaps just display the ‘temporary’ or ‘internal’ ‘deck’ or ‘level’ as from the Vocab Info – such as “A7”, or whatever.
