This is a post to announce that the new reworked hints for N5 have been officially released!
We noticed that some questions had hints that weren’t as helpful as they could be, which could sometimes lead to frustration, so we decided to ‘fine-tune’ those hints!
Changes 
As with the other hint updates, we have updated the hints to match the new hint system so that they are more helpful and guide learners toward the correct answer rather than simply telling them to try a different grammar point.
Example:
- テストの前に、よく____。
The answer that we are looking for here is 寝なくてはいけない.
With the old system, if ねなくちゃならない were submitted, a hint triggered that said, ‘Could you try another way of conjugating this structure?’, but with the new update the hint will say, ‘This works! However, we are looking for the ‘standard form’ of a grammar point that uses something less formal than ならない’.
- 覚える____。
The answer that we are looking for here is んです.
Now with the re-written hint, instead of asking for a different conjugation, it will trigger a hint that says ‘でしょう is used when the speaker is seeking confirmation. We are looking for a grammar point that is used when strongly asserting that something is true and carries the nuance of ‘it is a fact that (A)’ or to indicate that the speaker is asking for an explanation about something.’
Goals 
The main goal of this fine-tuning project is to make hints more useful by creating hints that guide learners toward the intended grammar point, rather than getting stuck trying multiple similar answers.
Clear distinction between Alternate and Wrong answers
We followed the same criteria as we did when we created new hints for N4-N1.
- Correct grammar and conjugation, but the tense or politeness level differs from what is asked for in the ‘Tense hint’
Example: 食べる instead of 食べます.
- Not the targeted grammar point, but meaning is close
Example: くらい instead of 頃. (This is a grey area, but if it makes sense in the context of the sentence, we count it as an alternate answer, but if it does not we count it as a wrong answer).
- Slight entry errors
Example: ちゆう instead of ちゅう.
Wrong Answers:
- Incorrect grammar usage
Example: Using にくい when やすい should be used.
- Ungrammatical answers
Example: Incorrect conjugation and ungrammatical use of grammar points (eg. using a grammar point with a noun when they can only be used with a verb).
Final note 
With this update, we’ve also added hints for many frequently submitted answers that previously didn’t have them!
We will be continuing with re-writing hints for N4-N3 grammar as well as vocab.
