…furthermore, regarding the grammar and vocab used in vocabulary review *definitions*…

Similar to my last question, but different.

What kind of grammar is typically used in vocabulary definitions?

I like to give myself a challenge, and so when doing vocab “fill in the blank” reviews, I often show myself the “hint” in Japanese first. But I often struggle to read the hint.

This is understandable given that the hints are dictionary definitions, which by their nature will often require more complex vocabulary and grammar even when (especially when!) the target word is very simple.

However, I’d like to get an idea of what kind of vocabulary and grammar these definitions are using. Is there any pattern to it or not? Any predictions as to when I might expect to understand them? I’m currently approaching the end of the N5 grammar course.

AFAIK, these are meant for more advanced learners of Japanese to provide a fully immersive experience.
There is no pattern with Vocab/Grammar used in them, to my knowledge.

I wouldn’t expect an N5 user to be able to understand them – maybe like N2/N1?
Or an advanced N3 user?

Like most things with Japanese, in terms of difficulty, the sentences will be comprised of relatively simple grammar, and all ranges of Vocab levels.

These hints do have a pretty similar structure. There’s a dozen of frequently used keywords like 示す、表す、使われる、言葉、表現, and grammar like ために、さらに、また.

If you make it a goal to read those hints, you could probably just study all those expressions ahead of when they would come up in the predefined study order.

Otherwise you’d probably run into all of them by N3 or N2.
