こと - Grammar Discussion

Hey @TurboSushi1 !

〜ている is used to convey that someone/something is in a constant state of ‘doing’ the verb it is attached to, and this こと is to nominalize verbs that comes before it.

For example, the sentence 想像することは大切なことです is translated as ‘Using your imagination is important.’, but a closer translation would be, ‘That which is to use your imagination, is important’.

Nice, thank you!

Hello everyone.

I have encountered this phrase in a light novel and i struggled to understand the first part.

自分がやられて嫌なことは他人にしないようにしましょう。

I thought it would be 自分がやられる嫌なこと but the て form inside the clause before the こと was what troubled me.

Is there a grammar point for complex こと clause like this ? I’m at N1 grammar and i don’t remember having studied this but i may be wrong. I think it’s the て form just before 嫌 that i can’t seem to process.

If i understand correctly,

自分がやられる嫌なこと : You [being done disliked] things => Disliked things being done to you

自分がやられて嫌なこと : You [being done and then disliked] things => Things done to you that you disliked.

Is my comprehension correct ?

Thanks in advance.
