Grammar させてもらう

I think Bunpro need to add this grammar grammar - what does させてもらう really mean? - Japanese Language Stack Exchange

Not commenting one way or the other if this needs a lesson on Bunpro but I will say there is a good section in Making Sense of Japanese by Jay Rubin that explains this kind of pattern in a more interesting way than most other resources. I think he uses the fairly common phrase お休みさせていただきます to explain his point. It’s been a while since I read it but I’d recommend the whole book to anyone who is around N3.

This is one that tripped me up for awhile. I searched it up more than any other grammar point. What made it click was imagining someone going up to a buffet table and going “Don’t mind if I do/I’ll just help myself”.

It needs to be added.

I finally got hold of the book and am really enjoying it, both its insights and Rubin-sensei sense of humor. I like its former title best, Gone Fishin’, though.

Thank you so much for the recommendation.
